why does nobody go raving?

there is plenty of space to dance.

heavy tunes (the type they play on dnb arena, not catered to trainspotters like the over-criticized club scene)

there's more mc's.

confused ravers are being shown the wrong direction by other confused ravers.

the social aspects of clubs and the alcohol will always keep me coming...but for getting crazy on the dancefloor raves are the place to be. you can be yourself and not worry about being criticized. that's seems a problem why some people don't dance. when you're at a rave and everybody is rolling and like 16 years old, who gives a f**k what anybody thinks! you can have fun dancing not giving a f**k about anything. of course you can do that at clubs but it's really hard when you're elbow to elbow. there was a free party tonight at the orion with PHAT drum'n'bass upstairs on a good system. an nobody was there, what a shame

Re: why does nobody go raving?

promote the dnb areas then...ive always been a raver and just because I prefer one party or crew over another dosent make it sad...ive seen a 100 orions and will see many more come and go...im not worried about it...but if someone is then do something about it...promote if noone is coming to the shows...if i saw a good lineup and was feeling like partying id go...but if i dont know about it then oh well.....and i dont mean ravelinks...promote the DnB areas at other DnB parties, etc etc...whatever The orion isnt the basis of all raves in LA either...maybe there is dnb at the orion and it seems sad because nobody is there BUT at another location there was way better dj's playin at an all DnB party that everyone went to...

Re: why does nobody go raving?

The drum and bass areas ARE promoted. Just not at drum and bass clubs. Don't think you're not getting left out ... if you won't go to a club because the sound system is loud enough that you can't talk over it (while you're sipping an $11 mixed drink,) chances are you're not going to brave going to a rave.

Promoting costs money. Rave promoters promote at raves because junglists drop their flyers on the ground, bitch about the venue, bitch about lack of alcohol, show up at a rave and bitch about how they're not on drugs (sorry, you KNOW you're not going to find coke at a rave,) leave early, and come home and whine about how a candy kid glanced at them at a party. Rave promoters are over it.

whatever man....ive promoted, sold drugs, partied. and even helped throw a rave at the fox like 3 years ago with some friends...maybe some people would rather goto clubs and snort coke and say fuk raves maybe not...as for me...i go where i see talent i want to see...and i can smoke herb at either venue so whatever...this forum has no solid basis for argument

Re: why does nobody go raving?

i think it comes down to the talent...

bassrush as an example is a total rave, its got the elements of a rave, different areas of music, most of the time held at an all or late night rave venue......but wierd how they pack in 1000 or so heads....all people you see at clubs and at raves...why?

because they bring in talent that you dont hardly ever get to see....

the problem with the orion and qtopia partys and what not and the reason people dont go to said raves is because youll see a warm up dj that would be an opener or filler at a massive headlining a rave....people just dont care...

but anyway thats my 2 cents

Re: why does nobody go raving?

last night i saw dj amc, jcuzi, and lobsta at q-topia with mc's blitz, violentpeace, homewreckah. before them was sdf-1. about 90% of the tunes were rollers. the type of music people go ape s**t when they hear in clubs. i actually heard mampi swift - puppet walk last night!

these dj's go out looking for the hottest dubs to rinse parties out with. it's all about the music, wayy less politics in their music selection because they're playing the music for dancers instead of critics.

i've been going to parties for about 4 years now and could never consider myself too good for these dj's. i go to a club and see a lot of female friends but when i go raving all the homies are there (the dj's & mc's, not the e-tards). i'm down for my homies first and foremost. that's why i go and support but speaking totally non-biased, they were bringing the pressure better than any clubs do. but these dj's rarely get booked at clubs because they're "rave dj's" (the politics). so what i say is f**k politics, i go to clubs to see club dj's and if i want to see a dj that doesn't get booked at clubs, i'm not gonna complain about it, i'm gonna go see them rinse it at a rave. that's just me though...

Re: why does nobody go raving?

here's how i see it: unfortunately, when we separate the party-throwers from the party-goers, except for the very few i have gotten to know personally, most throwers aren't gonna give a f**k when it comes to the patrons that attend their event b/c they are looking at the quantity NOT the quality! i groan in agony when i hear that such and such is playing at the orion (which i refer to as Old'n'Dying) or the qtopia (hoRnygRopia) b/c i can't stand the venues and i can't stand the 'ravers' of today. i dread even marching up the stairs of death to the s**thole gap in the wall where they stick the real talent-DnB -because when i finally stomp and step over all the fkn 5 yr.old etards, nearly collapsing from lack of respiration to come around the corner and smack right into a bunch more glowing, sweaty ef**ks that just make me wanna turn right back around. and of course, all the gay ass trance and fkn hippetty hoppetty tardcore gets the main area, but even then, it is much cooler to plop down right where you are and kill some braincells w/ur fellow sandbox pals so you got something to talk about after nap time and juice break at school on monday! wtf?!?!?! get them the f**k out of there. i don't understand why those fkn party-throwers can't snap out of it and stop wasting gr8 talent that obviously won't get appreciated let alone enjoyed cos the environment is SHIT!!!! SHIT SHIT SHIT!!!! perhaps if these greedy ass rave masters would pull their thumb out of their _____ and quit thinking profit$profit$profit and start thinking progress progress progress than i think it would change.....until then, if it's at those locations, you won't see me there
(and this is not about anyone in particular, i am speaking more globally than locally, so if you think i am inferring 'you'---i'm not!)

so once a party-thrower gets to know you, they're off the hook? that's lame. your blind faith is whack, you're basically saying anybody you don't know is a greedy promoter and all the promoters you know are cool. promoters aren't the only ones making profits off parties. q-topia and the orion are relatively cheap to throw parties meaning the dj's actually have a chance of getting paid!

Re: why does nobody go raving?

this eltisist attitude ^^ is what's wrong with the scene. some kids at raves need direction. they're not hopeless. many junglists now used to be pill-popping ravers. so instead of hating on these kids, we should be trying to inspire them. last night i was dancing with all the ravers and they were giving me five and stuff. that's what it's all about to me. i gave them flyers and hopefully they will be attending future jungle events. and stop carrying glow sticks on them. once again, they are not hopeless!

raves are part of the jungle "scene" correct? so why do you have to hate on them? is it because you are a club dj so you want to sabotage rave dj's? is that it? i'm sure that's your honest opinion (they suck), but it's not really necessary. i know bashing raves is in style nowadays but it certainly is not productive to the jungle scene (clubs, raves, outdoor parties included) because more and more candykids are converting to junglists everyday.

Re: why does nobody go raving?

i support the split...club, one off, massiv, whatever......i dont like anything except dnb and old skool and hip hop so fuk payin 25 dollars to go somewhere where the dnb is in a craphole sweatbox and fuking trance is blaring over all other sounds....i used to deal with that...then i wisened up to where my money was going and the talent i was paying to see. sure, good dj's play at raves i will admit that but its just not worth it to me anymore..i prefer the dnb one off above all else.

I dont really care either way....i just dont have cash to blow on a tarded out venue with less than quality sound......i like my s**t different.....im no eletist...i goto a rave now and then....but on a night were for 25 dollars i can go see fair dj's playin at a rave or for 15 dollars i can goto a club or one off and see better.....well thats no brainteaser now is it? i raved hardcore.....when raves were really raves.....s**ts changed, AK1200 and DARA said it themselves and i am all about evolution, not about stayin in the E swamped mafia run rave venues pumping my money into something that isnt as good as i could have.....

this is supposed to be the intelligent electronic music...we are the future..

i dont see a bright future for raves...they have been diseased for years, and its taking its toll..

and i dont see anything intelligent about paying loads of money to goto them...

i have nothing agianst raves or ravers....we have all been one at some time, some of us still are...its all in how you look at it.....i love the essence of the "rave" and i always will, but to me, that essence died out a long time ago.....its just sick now...but its all IMO so dont get mad at people for their opinions....thats not intelligent either...its iggnorrance..support what you believe and never stop...that is what i say.

Re: why does nobody go raving?

Have to say this is a good topic! As a growing d&bist I think ive felt the way you all feel at a certain time or another. Ive come to just take everything in as it comes, If i can afford a rave ill go, If i find out about the one off, i'll get really excited! If i happen to help a friend out in promoting his club and be a part of that for a moment i feel as if ive put my grain of sand into some thing i belive in. Im taking what i can. As a dj point of view I think we'll all play if it feels good anywhere...(rave,club,wharehouse,bedroom etc...)
And the $ thing is normal i think. I mean if you know how the world turns you know that its all $. So hopefully the people making it will do the right thing in keeping the scene alive with it. And it seems like thats the case. Bassrush goes off with Talent!! (you need $ for that). Some peeps just dont see that the $ actually goes somewhere.
planes, hotelrooms, f**kin diapers n s**t!! anyways enough of my gut spilling thanks. S.D.E.C.

Re: why does nobody go raving?

I like the way you think Critikal!
You have faith obviously you understand that they do need guidance. I am one of them. I wouldn't label myself a "raver" but being ignorant of the "scene" I don't know the difference. I would've called any sort of party with dj's a rave, just because of the type of music. And I would've called any music like this techno (I still dont know the difference yet) I have always associated the music with 'rave'. Because I never knew any different. I was lost following other peeps whom were also lost. So maybe instead of getting all bent out of shape and talking s**t about all the little 'sandox playing candy eating 16 year old trance lovers', you guys should be spreading the word of the jungle scene. Because we are the future, not raves. WE dont know any different. I am 21 years old, and just turned onto the 'scene' and am still absolutely clueless. Alls I know is I love the music, and watching the dj's is my new passion. But I have to admit that I have always thought you go to listn to this new kind of music at a thing called a rave where everyone comes to do drugs and be care free. I didn't know all the hard work, effort and talent that goes into this music. We need more people like critikal out there that have such a passion for the music but really care about the peeps who listen to it.

Would you go raving if it were free Critikal? I'm with you, I wouldn't pay an arm and a leg to see LA dj's but if it's free I'm there! Friday night at the Orion was free. Other parties are like $5. I really think those drum n bass arenas at the raves could use more drum n bass heads there representing. .

Re: why does nobody go raving?

f**k yeah i goto free raves....ive gone to the orion when they cost 15 bucks....thinkin they would have dnb and they didnt....and i still got blunted to some funky house.....im not dissing raves as a whole....they are the reason im here today...and yeah id spin at a rave, club, one off, whatever! i dont give a fuk...were all some kind of raver inside...its all in how you label your own self.

yo, yetagian....thanks for your kind words. As for just getting into this, develop your own views on the scene through trial and error ( not the drama you see) and always stick to that no matter what people say...oh and keep track here in this parties forum and youll discover the top notch level of parties in the junglescene. welcome!

its all in how you look at things my friends...just party and have fun...that is the way it should be.

oh and as for sneakin in and all that, well i used to like years ago, but unless its obvious that its a mainstream cooperate event just taking our money....i pay...because thats how the next brotha is makin his money...

and also because im a dj and i know it sucks not to get paid, and if alot of heads are doing that then the dj's play thinkin the cash is there but its not.....

not dissin on your ways...do what you do homie, we all got our thangs we do....i just think karma is a bitch!

respecht-
and over all...i support the split...i didnt 3 years ago, but the rave scene is changing and id like to see that seperation eventually...we must progress, not saturate in the rave scene of today...its evolved like a virus and we need to try to save as many heads as we can before it gets too far out of hand....just ask anyone whos been around for a while...its changed alot!

i dunno if it's still like this, i haven't been to a rave in quite a while. but most dj's were limiting themselves to techy hardstep and darkstep, there wasn't a lot of diversity there, which i think is one of the coolest things about the genre of music.

i think for a lot of people it's because they've gotten older, have real 9-5 jobs and don't have the time or energy to expend on "raving" per se, since it takes a lot more out of you.

i realized today that i kinda miss the actual 'rave' experience but honestly don't think i've got the patience or the stamina these days.

Re: why does nobody go raving?

i've only been partying since 99 so i haven't seen the dopest parties or anything. what i do know is i like the fact there's room to dance at raves and that i can totally let the music take me over and look like a freak without worrying what anybody thinks. when i go to clubs i have to tone my dancing down so i don't draw too much attention. at raves i let it all out because 1) there'a room to do so and 2) most the other people are doing the same thing. i don't care if they're rolling and i'm just high. doesn't concern me, i'm there for the music. it's not like it takes a grip of stamina to go raving.. there's actually places to sit down at raves! (and im not talking about the floor) you can sit down all you want. they just about always have red bull at raves. catch your breath that's what i enjoy doing. sorry if this seems all drama to you, i'm just trying to pump some life into these parties that get much more crap than they deserve. i know it's 2003 and raves aren't as "cool" as they used to be but the tunes are 2003 for the most part. i like variety like someone else said. i'm much more of a club promoter but still find it fun to go raving sometimes and figure the main reason other junglists don't is because raves are "taboo" and i think taboos are whack! it really depends on the line-uo though, who you want to see. that's first and foremost in my opinion...

Re: why does nobody go raving?

I don't go to massive raves for several reasons
1. too many kids on drugs that have no idea what electronica or a DJ is.
2. it costs too much money
3. they usually over sell the tickets so your packed in like sardines
4. undercover cops breathing down your neck while you are diggin thru your bag for your chapstick or whatever else you got in there
5. e-tards
6. the cost of alcohol (if there is any in the first place)
7. they are usually in BFE or it's over 1,000 degrees that day (I almost died at Oracle one year cause they didn't open the gates on time and we had to wait in the heat with no water)
8. Getting f**ked for $60 tickets to the HowSweetItIs which never happened!!

I could go on but those are the main reasons.

ClownSteppa... I think you have to realize that a lot of people who have been around a bit longer are just not feeling the state of the current rave scene. It's not a matter of being elitist or it being taboo... it's just wack for many of us. The state of things that I last remember before I just said f**k it years ago... oversold tickets, endless lines, loads of kids just completely fugked to s**t and if it was a smaller rave, then the dnb area got the s**tty sound system from radio shack. Why do I need to deal with that? That in itself puts me in a bad mood before I even get to the jungle area.. I remember this one kid kept asking me for a sip of my water.. problem was the f**ker was rollin' so hard he had chewed his lip into a crusty bloody mess. Why should I deal with that s**t? like a child that touches something hot... eventually they learn not to get burned. Meanwhile, I can just hit up one of the many dnb specific events.. get in, mash up the spot, and generally have a really good time.. with far fewer bad experiences. I, too, go for the music and the environment. That means, good tunes, a proper sound system, and me going ape s**t on the dance floor. I get the feeling that you feel free'er at raves.. less people to criticize and what not.. but you have to realize.. you are putting that limitation on yourself. If someone doesn't step to you and beef in your face.. then what's to worry about.. who cares what anyone thinks when it's you on the floor.. be it club or rave.

Also, do I feel the need to be the jungle savior and "educate" the ravers of today. Uhhh.. no. Why? because that is just bulls**t. If anything, that sounds about as elitist as you can get. If you discover jungle.. good for you. DnB doesn't need recruiters.. and people aren't enlisted no matter how many military references you see. People will naturally gravitate toward things they like.. some discover it thru friends, raves, internet, relatives, whatever. If the rave scene vanished today... people would still be hittin' up the jungle spots.. and I think part of that is due to the clear split that has occured over the past few years.. supporting the grassroot folks that really provide you with the music we love is what will keep that phat bassline rollin'

Anyway.. I'm getting too old for all this bulls**t. Lately, I've started really liking headphones and going ape s**t at the house..

I hate everything.

Re: why does nobody go raving?

hey man i go to probly 1 rave for every 10 clubs. basically i went to a rave and came home and posted this s**t up. people who have been around forever make everyone think raves now suck because of 'how much better it was before.' but on any given night, you can have as much fun as you allow yourself to. clubs are typically more social. raves are more about the music. at least to me. that's why i think it's cool, having a party vibe other than club once in a while. i can have fun smoking pot, or NOT, listening to jungle no matter where i am and just because mad people have horror stories from raves doesn't mean they're all terrifying experiences. i don't really have many horror stories cuz i'm over by the speaker where it's about the music. (i don't mean to be preaching i just think somethings positive need to be said about raves because they are part of our culture)

Re: why does nobody go raving?

I like that, it was well said and sounded like it was true to him, no fronting. I can appreciate that, and I think you are smart enough and have been around long enough to realise what the good parties are and what arent the good ones. All raves dont suck, it just so happens that 75% of them do

Re: why does nobody go raving?

I think this thread is dope. Well, no matter what, I am the jungle woman and this really isn't such a unique identity if the only music playing is jungle...at a "just dnb" party or club, all the women are jungle women.... I gotta hold it down, yo....The last party I was at (having a blast, needless to say) around rolled 4:30 AM, 5 AM, 5:30, etc, and I thought: 'This is why I'm here. It is the only place in the whole damn city playing Jungle at the top of it's lungs with people still lovin it and dancing, having a good time'

But as an artist, I totally understand why people DON'T go to parties...I just happen to have a rediculous amount of energy and Nobody knows why or from where...N-E-Ways, cool thread...>

Re: why does nobody go raving? a fairy tale

... so this one time ... at ... Q...

my two friends were doing a tag-team set and I got in free. It was the very first time I had ever been to q-topia. (you should know that I have developed a passion for electronica since 1990. Specifically my loves are: dnb and deep/hard house, tribal/primal/hard trance. BUT it was all in my head via my headphones. I was never actually *in* the scene for two reasons: 1) Too many things on ghetto news 11, 9 and 5 scared me s**tless about 'rampant' drugs, unconscious sex etc. *remember this was the very beginning of the AIDS epidemic, when nobody but researchers really knew much about it and 2) I didn't have a friend in the world who liked my music so I kept it to myself.)

back to the story....so on the way to the tiny backroom with the radioshack-ass k-mart sound system that kept cutting out, were all these people LITERALLY lying atop each other like laundry, like towels or something. I was MORTIFIED. I had *never* seen *that* many people *that* f**ked up *ever.* I had been to outdoor, overnite parties or deep cover warehouse parties thrown by friends or friends of friends by this time with no weird laundry situations...the only thing good about that experience was that it was where I discovered Mars ... but honest to god, I was so freaked out that I couldn't even dance. before you ask, no, I am not some sort of judgemental freak. I am a poet and am a little more sensitive to things than others are, like most artists are...but in my case I turn sight into sound in a way and the only sound I could come up with that night was Homer Simpson's when he screams in fear (LOL) you know the one. I am also a "den mother" type having been around the universe's little chemical helpers all my life so I tend to scope out that one REALLY f**ked up girl or guy, get them some water, find their friend, borrow a cell phone to call someone for them, whatever. but that night the place was FULL of people who should've been alone in a dark quiet room with ice on their foreheads. and I really had no idea what to do about it. so before buying my lone ticket to bassrush to see Photek and Goldie, my more experienced friends told me that I wouldn't have to worry about what someone up there called e-puddles and raversludge (LOL) b/c junglists are there to dance and maybe hit a blunt, but really to dance. And they were absolutely correct. *Wow*

xox to all you beautiful, non-judgmental dancers, djs and lovers of electronic music -- (to include whatever else you're into besides dnb.)

to grumpyboy: no disrespect, but I think I am glad I stayed in my headphones 10 years ago. otherwise I might sound elitist and old and bored. kinda like *almost* everyone who was *in* the scene 10 or more years ago. the ol' synapses just don't seem to fire as quickly as they used to, eh? seratonin levels permanently low? wow. maybe you should see a doctor about that.

Re: why does nobody go raving? a fairy tale

do I sound like an elitist? if so, my bad. I was hoping that the smile at the end of my post would soften the blow.

Hmmm... my bones hurt...
