Create:Fixate Kicks Off The New Year
With Another Installment of Their Beloved
The Optical Lounge and Audio Lab
At Beverly Hills Location
Saturday, January 24, 2004

Los Angeles, CA - Arts organization Create:Fixate kicks off the New Year with another installment of their beloved group art show The Optical Lounge and Audio Lab. The event returns to Beverly Hills at 8601 Wilshire Blvd. Beverly Hills, CA 90211 (at Stanley, just two blocks West of La Cienega on the North side) on Saturday, January 24, 2004. The 9th floor space boasts a beautiful 180-degree view over looking the city. There will be a free preview of the exhibit from 4:00pm – 7:00pm with atmospheric beats by Jubal. The event runs from 7:00pm – 2:00am. Admission is $8.00; $5.00 before 10:00pm. For more info please visit www.createfixate.com.

Each installment of this popular group art show features new work by some of LA’s best emerging artists along with some of the city’s finest DJs.

The January event will feature 24 visual artists including Logan Hicks exhibiting his multilayered stencil works, Freddi C.’s ‘Flyer Miles’ - a series of paintings inspired by the electronic DJ culture and its generated street art - and Tim McCormick’s paintings - improvised works careening between figurative expressionism and surrealism. In addition, on-going live painting during the evening will be presented by Jason Macaya, Tony Koehl, Andrew A. Soria, and Jim Mahfood.

Musical guests will feature a special live set by Fussible of the Nortec Collective, who is introducing COLORES Vol. 1, a new series of compilations of electronic music created by some of Latin America's most important and innovative electronic producers. Special guest Liza Richardson from KCRW will also provide musical atmosphere as well as sets from DJ's Mick Cole, Phear, Vanyoand AquaVee.

Create:Fixate is an organization dedicated to showcasing the work of emerging artists in a unique environment. Every two months Create:Fixate founder Michelle Berc curates, produces and hosts these stunning group art shows which feature a diverse array of visual artists – painters, photographers, sculptors, and multi-media makers. Each show boasts an equally wonderful array of beat masters – usually LA’s finest DJs spinning everything from house to techno, drum 'n' bass, downtempo and experimental music, plus a few live performances.

Previous events have hosted between 700 to 900 guests and exhibiting artists are always very pleased with their sales. “2004 will be an exciting year for Create:Fixate - we will be expanding with themed art shows, as well as adding different types of talent to our line-up, and then there’s the development of our non-profit division which is in full swing, this will be a great year to explore Create:Fixate’s growth and expansion!” said Berc. By connecting the worlds of art and music Create:Fixate produces one of the most successful showcases of today’s art scene in Los Angeles.

Below you will find short bios on the talent being showcased at the Saturday, January 24, 2004 event.

The Optical Lounge [Art:Photography:Sculpture:Multi-Media] ~

Tim McCormick
Southern California native Tim McCormick is a self-taught artist with over 5000 paintings to his credit, producing over 500 pieces in 2002. "I continue to elaborate and refine my improvised approach with the goal and desire to see just how far I can take it," said McCormick.

Logan Hicks
Logan is an east coast transplant who has grown roots in Los Angeles to pursue his Urban based art. He has gained notoriety through freelance jobs with Nike, Burton, Red Bull, and Asics. His unique spray stencils have been showcased in forums such as Anthem Magazine, Blond Magazine, the "Stencil Graffiti" book, and will be showcased in an upcoming book from Soft Skull press titled "Stencil Pirates". In addition, shows in Berlin, San Francisco, Paris, and Chicago have helped shed the spotlight on this up and coming artist.

Elizabeth Lopez
Elizabeth Lopez was born in San Antonio, TX in 1972, and educated at the San Francisco Art Institute where she received her B.F.A. in 2000. Influenced by her early environment, the work of Lizz Lopez touches on issues relating to iconography, technology, and the struggle between reverent ideals and modern life. She currently lives in Los Angeles where she works and plays.

Robert A.D. Frick
Robert A.D. Frick is known for creating artwork that is totally non-representative at inception and remains so upon completion. Frick’s work allows the viewer to derive representative imagery from abstractions. This addresses the brain's ability to sub-consciously process repetitive patterns in both the obviously spatial and subtly self-similar domains. The artwork evokes different reactions from its viewers who notice things that even the artist doesn't notice, so the work evolves every time someone new views it.… Frick creates all works digitally, with outputs on various mediums, primarily large format canvas. He is also a digital artist, by trade, for Digital Domain, in Venice, CA, where he lives.

Freddi C.
Born in London, England and currently based in Los Angeles, Freddi C. received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brighton University in England. Over the past five and half years, Los Angeles has been her home. Previously, she lived in New York for eight years working as an art director for a textile company. Since then, she has been working full-time as an artist and graphic designer and recently opened a design studio gallery space called theLab 101. www.thelab101.com

In Aug 2000 Freddi started a series of paintings entitled 'Flyer Miles' which are a visual metaphor for the excitement and chaos inspired by the electronic DJ culture and its generated street art forms (taggers;computer graphics;CD & vinyl covers and flyer imagery) While incorporating the elements of contemporary urban life she hopes to bring this to a main stream arena, creating a kind of Pop Art for the new millennium. www.freddic.com

Robert Rootenberg
When risk-taking and living on the edge are the underlying themes of your artistic expression, the viewer can expect nothing less than the art of Robert Rootenberg. Social identity, the diabolic, and the divergence of reality and fantasy, are the issues predominant in Rootenberg's work. Rootenberg develops a distinctive vernacular in his paintings with mixed-media, photographs and works on paper. These envision the wonders of survival/existence. A native of Los Angeles, Rootenberg studied music composition, created sound effects and edited feature films, then practicing law for a dozen years before devoting himself full time to his art. Rootenberg describes his art as visual anthropology, the reaction of the human experience smacking hard against the empiricism of daily life.

Michelle Berc
Michelle's unlimited creative endeavors include art, photography, film and music. Recently, her artwork and photography have been her central focus. The motivation behind Michelle's photography stems from her passion for music and DJ culture. This musical passion also inspires her 2-dimensional artwork. Using design markers, Michelle creates a unique perspective, contrasting the granular structure of pointillism with the complexities of fractal design and tribal folk art. Her pieces are both organic and geometric in nature. Although reminiscent of the pop art of the 60s, Michelle's artwork contains fluidity uncommon among the 2-dimensional trend of that era. She is also the founder/curator of Create:Fixate.

Lionel Uhry
Lionel Uhry is a Los Angeles artist whose fine art evolved from his background as a professional graphic designer. Uhry has quickly established a growing and loyal following. He sites his major influences as Mark Rothko, Tetsuro Sawada, and Andy Warhol. Lionel’s work attempts to evoke emotion in the viewer by capturing the essence of a particular moment in time while further exploring the expressive potential of color contrasts and modulations.

Trace Palmer
Irish designer and artist Trace Palmer learned to blow glass in Oregon and currently uses her skill to make glass jewelry, pendants, rings and special designs. She has been perfecting her techniques for the last 3 years achieving a sense of depth and space. This creates an illusion of perspective in her abstract designs.Palmer was the featured Diva of the Month for July 2003 on popular online site UnitedDivas.com. Look for her in the September issue of Travel and Leisure and the October issue of Teen magazine. In addition, Sharon Stone is a loyal fan, wearing several of her pieces in her new film Cold Creek Manor. Other celebs such as Pamela Anderson and Madonna’s daughter Lourdes also own pieces. www.karmakulture.com

Mark Dugally
Mark is an artist, designer and architect in that order. Encompassing practically every medium available that does not include a mouse or a monitor, he is not held down to one style. Most of his publicly shown work is abstract airbrushing mixed into a variety of decoupage on various substrates both found and created. He currently resides and works in Monrovia, California, in a historical barn transformed into his studio/workspace known as Dugallery. To see examples of Mark Dugally's work go to www.dugallery.com

Drew Dunlap
Drew Dunlap, is a Los Angeles-based artist currently exploring the concept of framing. This involves framing as editing, framing as an imposition put upon one by another, and the fetishized object itself. He is currently working on his MFA at Otis College of Art and Design.

Mila Sterling
Mila Sterling is an internationally exhibited and published artist currently based out of Los Angeles. This group of self-portraits was created at the end of an unbearably hot summer in Madrid, where she spent 2003. It is the first time she has worked in watercolor and ink on paper and represents a marked departure from her last series of abstracted urban landscapes. http://www.milasterling.com/

Neil Simon Poyuzina
Neil Simon Poyuzina is a self taught Californian artist currently living in San Diego. He enjoys working in many different styles and mediums. The works Poyuzina will be showing at Create:Fixate are solely composed of marble dust plaster. These works were created for the impact of color on the viewer, as if striking a musical cord visually. More info and works can be viewed at www.integratedcircus.com.

Andrea LaHue
Known for her flower paintings, Andrea LaHue has shifted her view and technique to capture the everyday energy of the city and events she experiences. Andrea LaHue is a self-taught painter living in Los Angeles with a dog, two parakeets and many, many flowers.

Marianne Williams
Marianne Williams is a Los Angeles based photographer and artist. She graduated from the photography program at the University of Southern California in 2002, and has since been showing at various art events and galleries including Cannibal Flower, Millicent Gallery, Humanitarian Superpower, and the Muse Gallery in San Diego.

Her photography is focused on presenting series of carefully matched images drawn from both unique studio setups and imagery from Los Angeles at large. Using aesthetic qualities like color, contrast, shape and size, the images are visually linked, inviting viewers to consider the connections between the pieces in each series. Her latest obsession with trespassing and abandoned sites has yet to land her in jail.

Lyuben Dimitrov
Lyuben Dimitrov is a Bulgarian artist who studied from 1986 to 1991 at the National School of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria. He received a certificate as a Specialist in Arts, majoring in Pictorial Art and Illustration. He earned his BFA degree in 1996 and the following MFA Degree in 1998 in Animated Film and Directing from the National Academy of Film and Theatre Art, Sofia. Since then he has painted, illustrated, created and directed his own animation shorts. Lyuben has worked in Bulgaria and Prague as an animator, director and character designer for Pillion Film, ZDF, RTV, Germany, MTV, and Discovery channel, and King Rollo- London.

Spectr
Known for his civic and artistic activities within the Drum and Bass DJ scene, Spectr uses black light paints to bring his oversized cyber-punk images to life. Influences from comics and Graffiti (as well as a steady diet of intense underground beats) fuel the intensity that is somehow balanced with a subtle sense of elegance drawn from an interest in fashion.

Peat Shaulis
Peat graduated from Maryland Institute in 1998 and then moved to Los Angeles where he currently hides from the sun all day. His artwork is highly influenced by the graphic power of poster work of the past and pop culture of the day. Peat enjoys speaking about himself in third person. Music is a strong influence in his artwork and he hopes to translate this into his illustration repertoire, which currently includes editorial illustration for magazines and books, and a fine arts career throughout the west coast and beyond. To see more of Peat's work and for contact information please visit: www.peatshaulis.com.

Heather Culp
Heather Culp is a Los Angeles based artist using photography, drawing, and painting to create a fantasy existing somewhere between fiction and reality. Inspired by dynamics of emotional intimacy, the complex relationship we have to our environment, and landscape as a metaphor for the psychological.

Live Painters:

Jason Macaya
Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Jason Macaya spent much of his youth surrounded by abundant natural beauty. He currently lives in an expansive, enigmatic city. He likes taking the colors, shapes, lines, and light of both worlds and fashioning some sort of balance.

Martin Gee
Martin is an award-winning graphic designer and illustrator based in LA. He works in traditional, experimental and digital media with a slight tendency for dark imagery. He is not a minimalist. He works with textures and layers to create a visual density. When asked to describe his current work, he replied "I have no f**kin' idea what I'm doing or where this is going. We shall see." http://hellvetica.net

Andrew A. Soria
Andrew needs to make art. Favoring (but not excluded to) painting, sculpture and printmaking, he continues to make art that allows him to enjoy the process of creation, which gives him the greatest satisfaction. A musician at an early age, he can play most string and percussion instruments and will pull a groove out of anything he can make noise come out of. Andrew works as a visual effects artist and designer in Los Angeles.

Tony Koehl
“Year of the Dragon... astronomical alignments form under the sign of Leo, creating the timeline of existence for my being; my soul now trapped in a body made of the earth as a gift. My assignment is to bring into our world images of my adventures across the universe. The quest has manifested in a subsonic explosion of intense images thrust into the mind's eye. Absorbing the environments that I explore, awaiting the next moment of inspiration, the next challenging vision. As a cosmic explorer, a 'Dimension Drifter', I try to bring back the realms of the fantastic. As my skill constantly advances, I am attuned with the mystical experience of the supernatural”

Audio Lab [House:Techno:Drum&Bass:Downtempo:Ambient] ~

Fussible
Pepe Mogt, now the sole member of Fussible, started this project with Roberto Mendoza and Jorge Ruiz. The threesome also formed part of Artefakto, a group that released 3 albums. In 1997, Artefakto became Fussible and the following year they released "Fono" a collection of techno and breakbeat influenced tracks. While the album was well received in electronic music circles in Mexico, and even received some airplay with the track "Milenio," the band members felt something was lacking.

After the release of "Fono," they began to rethink their work as electronic musicians and decided they wanted to develop a distinctive sound that would set them apart from their European and American counterparts. This sound would turn out to be Nortec, a style they would help create (the group Nortec Collective), as well as share with a group of likeminded musicians that would eventually turn into the Nortec Collective.

Around this time, Mendoza left and started his own more minimalist oriented project, Panoptica. Mogt and Ruiz would go on to co-produce many of the tracks on the first Nortec album. Fussible has released material with the Palm, Sonic 360 and Nettwerk labels. He has also done remixes for Ennio Morricone for a Compost Records remixes collection of Morricone's work and for 1 Giant Leap, among others.

Fussible from the Nortec Collective will be playing a live set at the event and also presenting COLORES vol 1, compilation. Colores Vol. 1 is a collection of 17 tracks by producers from Argentina, Chile and Mexico, and was compiled by Pepe Mogt for Mil Records. www.fussible.com

Liza Richardson
Liza Richardson hosts "The Drop" from 6:00pm to 9:00pm every Saturday night on 89.9 KCRW and DJs around the underground West Coast house scene. She recently music supervised the Mexican hit, Y Tu Mama Tambien and supervises commercials exclusively through stimmüng, a music and sound-design house based in Santa Monica. She has found musical solutions for brands such as Microsoft, Apple, NASCAR, Acura, Honda, Nissan and Motorola.

AquaVee
Andrea Giardina aka DJ AquaVee has been DJing since 1992. After inspirations by such LA clubs at Flammable Liquid and Sunday Love, her passion for house music grew ever stronger. She started her electronic vinyl journey in Los Angeles and made her way down to San Diego where she frequented The Guf & Deep. At Club Post Nuclear in Laguna Beach she landed her first gig. After college in San Francisco and travels around the world, she finally settled back into Los Angeles where she has been DJing ever since. Since Oct. 1999 she has been a buyer at Beat Non Stop Records on Melrose in Hollywood. Nowadays you can hear her spinning what some might call "Deep Tech", a combination of house and techno. Her vinyl collection is such that she might be called upon to DJ a downtempo, house, jungle, breakbeat, trance or even world music set.

Phear
"Seeking serenity through the abstracts of music, Phear's emotionally laden style of play has earned him the respect of music peers worldwide. As one who appreciates the multi-genre aspect of life, a twisted engagement is never one to put past him. Finding constant inspiration, you can catch him displaying as a resident at both "Muse" and at "The Unborn." http://djphear.com

Jubal
Jubal has been digging for downtempoed wax for five years. His music selection revolves around creating loungy and sultry downbeat vibes. Spinning is a vital means of expression for Jubal - it’s the way he channels his energy and emotions outward. Jubal currently holds a weekly Tuesday night residency at Halie Lounge in Pasadena. You can also catch him providing atmospheric beats at various lounges and art openings around LA. www.reclinelounge.com

Mick Cole
Heading the event production company SOL!D for over ten years and as one half of the internationally renowned DJ duo, The Bud Brothers, each week you can find Mick Cole selecting a fine blend of classy down tempo numbers at Moonshadows in Malibu and dropping chunky deep house grooves to funky big beats at the world famous Monday Social in Hollywood. Cole’s DJ sets have drawn influences from working with the world’s most innovative producers and selectors for many years.

Vanyo
Specializing in house music with a bit of tribal flavor, Vanyo's groove melding and sound projecting will surely get your feet moving on the dance floor. Besides DJing, his company, Force Field Sound produces and promotes many events throughout Los Angeles including San Francisco's Wicked Crew parties. Recently, Vanyo has been working hard in the recording studio producing original tribal house tracks which emphasis on percussion and live drumming. Expect future releases out on Benzina, a new record label being introduced in 2004.
