so really...liquid funk?

i've been bitching for a while, so a majority of you have heard this but ehh what the f**k. conversation and all.

liquid funk isn't f**king liquid funk anymore. and that isn't a bad thing.

hospital no longer pushes the kind of bubble gum sound they used to, which don't get me wrong i loved. i really dig what they are about now, with the whole cyantific - pulse 101 tune and that cls & wax tune that got totally neglected on the logistics - the trip release.

andddddd yeah maybe i'm off here but nothing has that same 'liquid' vibe i first felt when i heard this sound. its all upfront funk, which totally owns, but is no longer deserving of the title.

so i say, death to this sub genre! or the name at least. i love this music.

Re: so really...liquid funk?

Your definition of liquid funk is too narrow.

You make the mistake of associating your definition with a particular sound/style within liquid funk that you A) first became associated with, or B) really like.

Sub-Genre of Liqud Funk = not dead. continually evolving (like the rest of d&b)

So keep on your toes.

Re: so really...liquid funk?

i like it, it just seems to fit more into the more mainstream dancefloor now. which is not a bad thing...just my own two cents. *shrug*.

i diggit. and my definition is probably a bit narrow.

p.s. pulse 101 f**king ROOOOLZ.

Re: so really...liquid funk?

chrisk. (with a period and no space folks) is just enjoying drum and bass as it is now. i dare say there are times when i fall more and more in love with this music, and right now is definitely one of them.

i wouldn't call myself a 'liquid funk' deejay, nor am i a tech, ragga, or whatever the hell else deejay. just simply put someone who enjoys the sound, and feels that the liquid funk label no longer applies. to each their own though. i'll continue buying tunes from all of my favorites.

Hear hear, i agree.

The only label I ascribe to is:

Drum&Bass DJ.

or DJ Tanner. But that is another story altogether.

Hey, I love atmospheric D&B... you know... the one Hive, Ed&Op, Blame, ASC, Subfocus makes.

Same goes for the "funk."

Exactly c h r i s k . . .

The best thing about the evolution of drum'n'bass right now is the progression of each individual genre, be it tech, ragga, or liquid.

All have grown in their respective sounds, and producers are doing really innovative things. But, individual tunes blend together better today than ever.

If anything that's what makes LA's scene so fresh..the fact that, no matter what style gets you going, you'll prolly get a taste of it, no matter the night.

Re: so really...liquid funk?

to bo honest tho, no label or artist has ever really said that they were pushing the liquid sound or making it, it was always something that was just pigeonheld to their sound and now that the sound of dnb is evolving again like it always does, people are either doing two things, either saying liquid is dead(grew up, got stale, etc) or are now classifying more and more things as liquid, seems like most the music in the scene, if it aint wobble or amen rinse out, or hard loud synthy technoey dnb, its automatically labeled as liquid

people think d bridge is liquid for example lol.....liquid imo is the sound of fellowship - comin on strong

Re: so really...liquid funk?

not true

the term liquid came from Fabio's radio show, and you have labels like Liquid V, Liquid Kaos, and Hypes Liq-Weed.

I dont like using the term anymore at all, it doesnt apply.

Re: so really...liquid funk?

Fabio in his own words (taken from an interview on DOA)

"Liquid funk doesn't actually mean anything. I used it as I needed a name for my radio show, which then extended to being a name for the first album on Creative Source. That's why I got really pissed off a year or so ago when everyone started using it as a term to describe a certain style of music. I was like...well...you don't even know what it means, it's not a kind of tag for a genre, it's the name of my radio show. Of course I don't mind people using the term, as people need to tag and pigeon hole things, but when people start taking it out of its context and calling tunes liquid that I don't personally think is liquid I get a little annoyed, especially when some of the music they called liquid was really poor. I mean, that's not Liquid Funk. Of course people like to give a name to things, but the way I see it, it's not up to anyone else to make that kind of judgment, I coined the term, I'm the one who truly understands what the music means more than anyone else."
