D-Kay - Individual Soul (Brigand)
"DKAY - INDIVIUDAL SOUL Alright, its finally here, dkay's debut album. about one and a half years in the making, this album is a piece of hard work, endless love and dedication. the production involved 10 musicians, including a drummer and vintage instrumentalists like the hammond player and the vibraphone man. but not only the instruments were older than dkay (or the players themselves respectively) also the gear that was used stemmed from the 70s. A big old flagship mixing desk, crusty compressors, dirty tubes and pristine mics were used to encapture the music and bring it to life. But what are we talking about anyways? Well, hear for yourself and agree with us: this sounds like a dnb album made in the 70s. What seems quite impossible, has been done. Eleven tracks, funk, soul, jazz and rock influences combined with the mind twisting rhythm of drum and bass, all organically recorded, no samples used. this record comes clean of generic sample fodder of some of todays music. More on the contrary, this is generically original. "Indiviudal soul" takes you on an hour worth's journey, from the epic "friends" intro track, to the vibes of speeding through San Francisco while blasting "fat cop" from the system, or the re-interpretated dkay dnb classic "serenade" in a full on jazz version, re played, re written, re born. A live drum and bass album, composed, arranged and perfected. Vintage sound, classy instruments and inspired players, molten together by the production skills of dkay to form a blend of music that sounds as fresh as lemon ice cream on the hottest day of the year. We recommend regular indulgence."
