Building my own electric drumset
I want to build my own set of pads that I can program selected sounds on. Pre-programmed sounds would be great too, but what I really want is a set of pads, simular to these:
And I want to be able to patch them into my cpu so that I can assign certain samples to some type of memory that is contained in the pads brain.
I want to try and achieve this simi-cheaply, because I am a ghetto mofo. So I was wondering if anyone knows of some type of pads that I can program, that won't be too expensive.
Any other input you guys might have about ideas on how to build my own home-made drum machine would be much appreciated.

Re: Building my own electric drumset
that sounds like a pretty big task man...you're gonna have to know about digital electronics and stuff...you might be better off buying one of them MPC pad thingies and hooking it up to a sampler... |

Re: Building my own electric drumset
Ok you're talking about building a drum pad midi controller pretty much.... this isnt an impossible feat but it will be difficult and expensive, even for a 3rd year electrical engineering student.
It'd probably be easier to go out and buy a Yamaha (or i think Casio sells them also) Midi drum kit and program the pads to your samples in whatever sequencing software that you're using. |

Re: Building my own electric drumset
research a jazz/rock band called bella fleck and the flecktones. One of the musicians in the band made their own midi controller monstrosity, I forgot what they named it. It can't be that difficult and if you're a true ghetto mofo you may be dedicated enough to figure out how to slap something like this together. |

Re: Building my own electric drumset
Just get an old Roland PM16 drum brain and some cheap old drum pads, and then use something like NI Battery for software to play the samples. I got a PM16 and 5 old roland drum pads in the recycler for 200 bucks. The PM16 will hold 16 pads total, so I can add more as I go along. Check the recycler and ebay for used pads. They usually go for cheap. |

Re: Building my own electric drumset
yeah...that's what i did. you can buy a yamaha dtxpress for under 1000 bux, and then just use the brain as a midi controller for your pc or hardware, if you want that "kit" feel. |

Re: Building my own electric drumset
If you really want to do this from scratch..the main component that you will need is a piezo generator which is a sensor that converts force and motion to voltage and charge...hook this up to an amplifier circuit > to an ADC which can be hooked up to a simple midi uart to a PIC...make 5 or 6 of these and you got a home made electronic kit...
though you might have to get someone who can make the schematic for you unless you had something else in mind... |
