Re: Matisyahu - Live at Stubb's

Why is it that a white reggae artist gets all this mass exposure when there are obviously more talented, important reggae artists never heard on the radio?
This is a mediocre artist, he cyan touch Sublime (who he obviously bites), the police or the clash, etc. Not to mention Steel Pulse, Sizzla, Capleton, or Elephant Man.

Re: Matisyahu - Live at Stubb's

Curious why you think he has no talent...

Live... he kills it! Voice is always on point and can hang with the big boys on the beatboxin. And no denying his band.. their solos speak for themselves. Plus he's got some serious soul/meaning to his songs. He's got that unique angle, that those cats don't. HE'S A JEW!

Anyone catch the New Year's Eve show at the BellyUp? I got a recording... GOOD SHIT!

Re: Matisyahu - Live at Stubb's

Have to disagree with you 1000%.

He has amazing talent - an incredible voice - he can beatbox, scat, sing, chat, rap, and even does so in yiddish alongside english. That makes his sound very unique, hence him getting more exposure than he would otherwise. Not to mention his band is amazing, especially the bass player.

Second of all, he hasn't really broken into the mainstream lexicon yet, but - I'm sure he will someday soon.

And- def post up that live recording from nye!

Re: Matisyahu - Live at Stubb's

Yes, he's Jewish, so that's unique.
Could it also be referred to as a gimmick?

Not to say that he doesn't believe/live his message, but maybe it just goes down a little bit easier than OG jamaican vocalists.

Maybe its poppier.

I believe that much of reggae/rasta. can appeal to a wide group of people...themes such as tolerance, struggle against oppression, faith, living by a strict code, etc.

You guys can't seriously tell me you think this guy belongs in the same room with Sizzla, Capleton, Beenie Man, Buju Banton, Elephant, Vybz Cartel, T.O.K.?

Vanilla Ice was unique too.

Matisyahu should kick it with Pepper and Slightly Stupid.

but being played on KROQ is the mainstream

Not to mention huge ads in Tower records.

Re: Matisyahu - Live at Stubb's

wow. interesting take.

Don't hate, at least he's coming up.
I hated when Atmosphere got up on KROQ too, but they are still down, and I think this guy is/will be too. Let him claim a little fame, would ya?

Do I think he deserves to be in the same room as the headliners you mentioned?

Yes, I do. His songs have a great message (i like to think of it in universal spiritual terms, more than religiously), and his voice and music is damn good too. Some kat put up all his archives, and the guy is on point in almost all of them. I'd love to see him live at the Raggamuffin's Fest, and think he's a great addition.

ps- I highly doubt being Jewish is a gimmick. He's just staying true to his roots and doing what he does best. Singing out his soul for all to hear. I think that deserves some credit, but everyone's a critic.

Re: Matisyahu - Live at Stubb's

I saw a music video with a remix of King Without a Crown, and I felt it was NOTHING true to the original, except for the lyrics and even then it sound like some ugly BEP type of business going on. I was very disappointed. Now I am starting to think that this whole gimmick thang is true! Well its BECOMING true anyway... anyone see that???

Re: Matisyahu - Live at Stubb's

dood - soo glad i found this thread - i've been putting a lot of thought into this artist and how i feel about his music and how it is received in the dnb community...

first, let me preface by saying that i give him props for his powerful and positive message, however...

its funny to me that a large part of the dnb scene (from what i've observed) dig this guy so much especially since there was a lot of discussion a few years go about stateside MCs were poseurs for using british / uk slang and accent.

it's the same principle with matisyahu. he's from Pennsylvania. according to his bio, he's never even spent time in Jamaica. he got in to the reggae movement in Berkeley of all places. plus - how did Lee "Scratch" Perry wind up opening for HIM?

plus, i don't doubt his faith or participation is hasidic judaism but i can't wonder about the relationship of his religion and reggae culture (note - i didn't say movement, i said culture)...

i mean, yeah - i know the correlation politically between judaism and king selasie (sp)... but straight up hasidism is very rigid and puritanical from what i gather and the music industry (mainstream especially) embodies a lot of things that most religions look down upon. something about the way he markets himself just seems very contrived to me. not saying his not talented, i just don't find him genuine or authentic.

for me it's not necesarily a question of race per se, but religion is definitely a factor as that is what makes him "Unique".

if anything, he's a clever businessman who found an ingenious way to market himself...

I think those questions would be more clear if you have seen/read/heard interviews with him.

He explains that reggae is already a very conscious - religious genre of music, and that it is very easy for him to do reggae music - and still retain his religious integrity/lifestyle/and message through reggae music.

Re: Matisyahu - Youth

I bought Youth a few weeks back, and the firtst time I listened to it I was kinda dissappointed. Then I figured that was just my godlessness getting aggrevated, I guess I was expecting his message to have a more "universal" tone to it, which It kinda did, but then I cant hate the man for puttin out tunes like "Jerusalem" and his overall gnostic message. So... basically, I give him props for who he is and what he does (even though theres probably tons of hacidic jews critisizing him for what he's doing) but its his persona that makes his music.

but I'll still check him out at coachella...
