Yeah their voices didn't go well together. I met Mya before she was big and hung out with her, she is more beautiful in person then when she is on tv. Anyone see the DR. PEPPER Jam Master Jay commercial that he shot before he died??? I still think PEPSI is the best soft drink btw |

I like his new album, but the commercial is like "whatevs". I personally am not surprised by what any artists do. I mean Chuck D is on CNN talking, Ice Cube does movies and even a lot of "undrground" artists roll in SUVs sitting on "20s". Right now only really Mr. Lif and 50Cent are the headz i feel, which is strange cause they are on the opposite side of the spectrum. I personally think that "hip hop" has had the most major social effect on our country then maybe any other artform. I mean i werk in the Music Indy, but i have like 50 yr. old executives giving each other the "hip hop hug handshake" when they greet. I mean "baggy pants" or the way u wear ur hat, ur jargon, ur slang even to the way you walk/strut. Hip Hop and Rap is about rhythm and that parlays to life so nothing surprises me. If Common did a song with Justin Timberlake it wouldn't surprise me at all. I look outside of that, but this commercial is pretty weak IMO. Now the old SPRITE commercial with KRS-One or the Sprite with Pete Rock Commercial was ill. I even like the Jadakiss/Iverson Commercial or the new AND1 commercial with 50Cent. To me itz just about being good rather then 'pop vs. not-pop'. In the werds of Mos Def:
"I knew Jay-Z cause we grew up together and honestly in a freestyle he would serve 90% of MCs, underground or not"

I'm pretty suprised that this many people don't like the commercial. I think it was a smart move on Common's part. They show the show the short version of the commercial more often than they do the longer version. The longer version cuts off from the song into a scene where common's sitting at the desk of a record exec., who is offering to make Common dolls and stupid bulls**t, and Common just laughs it off saying, "I'm not that type of man." Then you see them outside and you see the exec showing a big Common statue and common just kind of brushes it off. I thought that everyone wanted that kind of stuff to be seen on TV. Isn't it beneficial to the ignorant television viewers who are so immersed in MTV and what not to see a commercial where a rap star is refusing all these ridiculous offers? And I mean, cmon, you really think common's outfit cost more than 50 bucks? I think Mya looks like a Mouse, too, but damn she has a strong voice. Has anyone heard the original "Compared to what?" There are close to 20 covers of that song...it's a great song and I think they flipped it quite well on the commercial. I can agree with most of you that Common is putting out something way different from his past albums, but that's called music evolution, y'all. Common was taking a completely different approach to this album. You can tell he wasn't trying to make another Resurrection or another Like Water. Every album he has put out has been dope...all the way back since Can I borrow a Dollar. One day It Will All Make Sense blew my mind in the way it was put together in it's non-linear thought process. Noone thinks in a linear manner, anyway. Common's new album is definately some rock oriented stuff...there's a lot of riffs and a lot of influences showing. You can even hear a little prince in one of the interludes. I don't know....I think common is a great artist even though his album is a little different, just like the Roots' new album. I'm happy to know that millions of people, possibly many impressionable kids, will be able to see a commercial where a person stares at excessive luxary and refuses it. peace everyone. |

i think that commercial is the most decent commercial put out yet with the music industry involved. obviously we can't stop it...even if we wanted to.
commercials are evolving jus like everything else. honestly it makes me happy that music is still making an impact on everything.
and as for mya. i think she's str8 dope. she's really one of the few female vocalist that has not veered away from her roots. look at her when she first came out and look at her now. she still looks the same. no plastic surgery...no boobieee implants. from an outsiders view...she still seems to have her roots in tact. |
