certain b-girls, how pathetic!
I wasn't going to say anything, but I have to say something now since I'm sober and know how to express myself better with better words, than I did last night.
As most of you know, I'm a photographer, I never post here I have my own website, I have 3 jobs, I am a full time student... I've started to attend some parties more often, Respect is one of them. Last nite, I was taking pictures, I'm trying to get an internship with Rinsemag and URB this summer, takin photos of djs, dancers and people is a huge interst for me at the moment. But I am young and I need to have fun, and when I'm done shooting...I drink and dance my ass off. I dont consider myself a great popper, but s**t I can move pretty descent. Last nite at respect I got reallly drunk, danced a lot, and unintentionally caused drama with some girls who claim that when I take their picture I take part of their soul.
Ok first of all that's one of the biggest bulls**ts I've ever heard from my opinion, but I respect anybody's beliefs. When I'm asked to stop taking pictures, I stop...but I do not appreciate to be bitched at if I dont believe in that theory and I'm honest when I say I dont, then I'm threathened!!! some stupid jealous bitch told my friend Drew that shes gonna kick my ass...so if you read this YOU who ever said that wants to kick my ass... You need to chill, if you're afraid I'm stealing your moves dont worry honey cuz I've been dancing wayyyy before I started taking pictures, which is a loooooong ass time ago, and to conclude I've been into electronic music for quite a while.
Sorry for the long ass note, but I needed to vent, and I also wanted to say that I'm not gonna stop takin pictures of all you mofos who appreciate being photographed.

umm..Dave..first off..bboying aint always about battling..it can about skills and how well you dance..or how you express yourself towards the music
bboying has been around parties for a long time..its just not in hip hop..its in all kinds of genre..
and why woundt bboying belong in drum n bass?..drum n bass is dance music right?...or is it..look at the dj while he's spinning kinda music...drum n bass these days samples alot of hip hop..beats , mc's , skratches etc
I love drum n bass and I love bboying...why cant we all just get along

Re: certain b-girls, how pathetic!
i tolerate breaking the best when it's in a big venue. when a large percentage of the dancefloor is marked off for one person to dance in at a time, it doesn't leave much room for other people to dance and turns a party into a spectator type thing.
i totally respect the art of it, just think there's a proper time and place for it. most people who can break/pop/tut whatever can dance freeform outside of a circle so it shouldn't be a problem for them to deviate from their circular rituals once in a while |

I disagree. There's a difference between trying to be "the best" and doing the best that YOU can. Even competition tends to make people do better, push them harder, make em dance more. Some people don't do so well under pressure (myself included) but thats how it is. I think it's how you perceive the energy. If you think a circle is a circle jerk then you'll only see it as such, for me it's a bunch of people wanting you to dance well when you're in the middle of it. |

i think if jungle's to get really big in LA, it's got to fuse with hiphop in some ways. i have a feeling it's going to be bigger on power 106 in the future than on kroq. (of course i may be wrong) with that being said, i welcome hiphop elements to our scene but would like to see them blend in a little more. it seems like some b-boys seperate themselves from the jungle vibe with their own hiphop vibe. like there's two kinds of people at the parties. i wish b-boys would dance outside of their circles more often and blend in rather than trying to stick out. seems like more often than not they demand attention when they dance and it screws up the jungle vibe. it's cool at hiphop shows cuz nobody dances there but this is jungle music. a totally different vibe (actual dance music!) |

Re: certain b-girls, how pathetic!
Probably because I am a newbie, I don't notice any kind of segregation in the scene, really.
I mean, I don't know what classifies one as a b-whatever or a junglist or a househead (--oh, ok, househeads--i can tell who those guys are, LOL, but...) I refuse to define myself personally and try not to define others by subjective boundaries/characteristics.
I think there is great individuality in the scene, and I think we should embrace it. Grouping or categorizing people as "b-boyin, bopping, clown steppin, hip hoppin', grindin, Carlton" in a negative light is akin to prejudice and splits the unity that music is suppose to inspire.
One Love, Unity: it is not about being homogenous. Unity in diveristy peps! Just as long as no one is getting hurt, express yourself. I love it.

I don't know about the Amish but I have heard off of discovery channel there are certain African beliefs about pictures taking part of ones soul. Regaurdless of if you think it's funny or weird or not, I feel it should be respected...on the other hand there's no need for the girls to threaten and treat you like s**t, unless you were talkin' s**t to deserve it, but I don't know the situation. I feel a photographer should respect a persons wishes if they don't want their pic taken but also should be respected when they agree not to...

Re: certain b-girls, how pathetic!
First of all competition is a part of many aspects of life (even work), not just the elements and hiphop. And if u dont think that drum and bass djs compete your wrong. They don't directly battle, but they compete for gigs, status, who has the best tunes etc.. And u may not wave your arms around a party but i see you post replies and tell fools off in threads when they try to act like they know more about hacking and programing then you. So in a way to me that is like waving your arms online saying i'm the best programmer.
Oh and by the way she's not talking about battling she was talking about someone not wanting a picture of them (that person was NOT me by the way-he he). So why all the inner hate?

This is not accurate.

In the DnB rooms at events in that same era (94-95) when DnB was really taking off, there were always bboy and occasionally popping circles at events,
...but yeah, there are differences between cipher circles (bboy or popping) where people are just vibing, getting down together and having fun,

ok i have soooo much to say about all this but im not gonna get into thisbut one opnion...... if you care to hear further jus ask me jus cuz theres to much to say
but to say that someones element should no be represented in the D&B scene is wak ... there are to many influences and elements to it and why hate in them???? ita all about how you feel and what the music makes you do.... weather you boog, pop, bboy, salsa whatever, jump, groove its still all about the music and if you dont like it look away but to want to delete it from the scene is wak! diff people react to D&B if we all did the same s**t at partys it would be boring....... like EVERYONE lookin at the dj and jumping with there right hand up beating the bass yanno? im not hating on that s**t... i do it too but its all about diversity.... look at the people in the scene we all have diff style and s**t ... you go to a hip hop show and everyone has simular style in clothes n attutude..... im jus suprised that in our scene that is SOOOOO diverse that someone had to try and come up and say that something shoud be put on the outs is REALLY selfish!
and as far as us poppers/bboys getting in the way i have never seen a circle right in front of the djs... were not stupid we keep it to the back or near the back.... so for all you haters... jus go further to the front and we wont bother you
but this is my own opnion..... amongst others |

Re: certain b-girls, how pathetic!
eecue,
Well, I never said there was a gigantic battle circle, just that bboying and popping have been part of the "DnB scene" since its inception.
Incidentally there were circles since I specifically remember some dude giving me bad vibes for minute and trying to battle me,
...you might be right about it not being the first all DnB event (I was wrong about the date, it was may11, 1996 BTW)
but then, what was?
certainly earlier events had DnB rooms...
many events in 93 or so mixed 'hardcore' and 'dnb'
but I remember P. Blaine or maybe Pasqual saying it was the first (not that their word is the end all, just that I cant think of an earlier ALL DnB event other than people's house parties and that kind of thing...)
and I dont think it was at Metropolis in OC
I believe it was at the Glasshouse in Pomona but Im not entirely sure

it's not like what eecue says goes... i think it's selfish when bboys start running around the inside of the circle clearing people out of the way and i think that is eek's sentiment as well. not everybody is gung-ho about dancing circles in the same way that not everybody is into moshpits. a b-boys flying foot could mess someone up about as bad as a mosher's flying elbow too. and i really think dancing circles takes more attention off the dj's/mc's than anything else. it has people turning their backs to the dj. i know if i was a dj i'd want as many people grooving as possible rather than one dude grooving super duper extra hard. so what i do when im standing around a circle watching people dance is do a little dance of my own. and i notice im always like the only person spectating and dancing at the same time. |

Re: certain b-girls, how pathetic!
i think more people would come to parties if more people would dance at them. when dancing circles start less people dance so people feel less comfortable dancing and leave the party with not as great of an experience. really anything that impedes people from dancing freely irritates me. now if b-boys and girls could just dance with everybody else (like i know blaze and illuzion do) the vibe would be better.
there are other reasons why not a lot of people dance but this is just a tiny reason and i don't really think it's that big of a deal in the big picture

Re: certain b-girls, how pathetic!
ok well im not at all arguing..... but what i have to say is this! its not like were actually turning our backs to the dj...... were reacting to what the dj has to play and if you wanna bust ....bust! ... i mean when people are gettin a drink from the bar and there backs are turned are they thinkin that a drink is more improtant??? i dont think so... or if someone goes out to have a cigg i dont think there leaving cuz they dont like the music.... and as far as bboys running in circles to make the circle bigger is cuz spectaters get real cloese and causes the circles to get smaller so for you "not top get a elbow in the eye" you have to make the circle big enuff to dance in... its not like we take the whole room up! we keep it to the back ... and if there are way to many peeps at the venue you CANT have a circle ... even if peeps try...... you cant..... were not gonna make people stand up against the wall yanno?
like i said im not arguing jus givin my point and your point is valid too
aaand i dont think that EVERYONES gung ho about mcs but do i think that a elemnet should be banned?? no that is what makes out scene so diverse... there are so many ways to rep the music

OH and also talkin to someone that clown stepps your style of dancing is big you require room maybe its not in a huge circle... eventhough your style is welcome to represent and bring more flavor to us... you still need more room...... so does that make me want you to stop cuz you reqiuire more room than the average dancer no you feel what you feel and the music makes you dance what you dance.... and if someone likes what your doing or that your dance is not the average people will look at you ... thats jus propps. aaaand sometimes when im popping by myself )whick i do often) a circle majically appears around me for no reason when all i wanna do is practice so should i stop jus because of that???? i dont think so.... |

Re: certain b-girls, how pathetic!
of course you shouldn't stop. if the circle seems like it could annoy other people you could dance a little to the side and take your circle with you maybe. (sorry im overanalyzing)
oh and for the record i don't need more room than your average dancer to 'clownstep' (lol). i prefer it but i don't demand it. i like to have some footwork in my dancing and not just jump around so obviously i don't like being cram-packed in a venue. but someone just jumping up n down i don't really consider dancing. to me it's usually frustration and i move back to the venue where i have more room to move. but really i don't need much room at all, just a lil something (for your clarification)

Re: certain b-girls, how pathetic!
so totally understandable clown steppa i understand.... its jus im my POV its another element that i think dosent demand total attention from all.... but i never in my years of popping have i ever seen frown or annoyment from circles..... but i jus feel that if you want to pop you should be able to and if a circle arrises why the f**k not? i mean when a MC decided to go into the crowd (mc ?) and everyone looks at him and gives him rrom whats the diff? and he usually does this s**t twards the front of the stage? hes no more important to the scene than dancers.
and you should mobb in the circles mos deff! you have a unique style than anyother dancer in the drum n bass scene ... all i have seen is poppers, groovers, bboyin/Girlin and some that jus wanna showcase there dancing by jus i guess for sake of not havin a name for it jungle hoppin! ... all diff kinds of people jump in cirlces and so should you! its a show n tell time to see what kind of talent everyone posseses... f**k i have even seen jazz dancers pop in and do there daymn thang! i invite you to show what you got ..... it would be interesting... its jus like a cypher of a mc cirlce... all elements is welcome....... jus mobb in a cirlce and youll know what kind of love all of us have for this kind of "DANCE MUSIC"... its another brotherhood..... and if circles do bother you that much id like for you to give us another option....we all take it seriously and practice all week at diff spots and take poppin classes from the EB's themselves and if we want to showcase it and have people feel it and other fellow dancers i have no problem... in the scene i have plenty of dancer friends and sone that dotn but f**kin love what we do ... and if i feel like puttin my s**t out there for people to see .. and from one dancer to another i think you should respect yanno?
hope to see ya in the circle. |

Re: certain b-girls, how pathetic!
plenty of people dance and im sure you've noticed that the circle that they have going on at respect has no impact as far as that goes. just because there aren't poppers and bboys doesn't automatically mean people are going to dance who were watching them before.
many people could give a f**k whether or not there is a circle, because it won't effect their decision whether or not to dance. in my case i may watch the circle, and after i tire of it im going to go do my own dancing.
from a deejays perspective, i could give a f**k if someones not dancing looking at me. people dancing in whatever way they feel it is enough. some people are much more technical with their dancing. i would much rather play to a bunch of bboys and bgirls dancing then a bunch of people staring up at me from the speakers only nodding their heads.

According to clown_steppa ...
i think more people would come to parties if more people would dance at them. when dancing circles start less people dance so people feel less comfortable dancing and leave the party with not as great of an experience. really anything that impedes people from dancing freely irritates me. now if b-boys and girls could just dance with everybody else (like i know blaze and illuzion do) the vibe would be better.
there are other reasons why not a lot of people dance but this is just a tiny reason and i don't really think it's that big of a deal in the big picture

Re: certain b-girls, how pathetic!
I just think that instead of trying to exclude people from the scene because they break, pop or whatever WE SHOULD ALL JUST FOCUS OUR ENERGY INTO BRINGING MORE POEOPLE INTO THE SCENE because that would create more fans, more partys, dj would get paid better etc...
When i hear the music it makes me pop and that's not something that i can help so by someone telling me that i can't do it that's like telling me to stop going to dnb partys. And where do we draw the line? One day its breakers the next day its emcees, then i'll be fools that wear white shirts and pretty soon i'll just be the dj and a few heads that conform to the rules. (i'm exagerating but u get the point-ha ha).
And don't forget that jungle partyes are still partyes so if foo's wanna drink, dance, socialize, bob their heads, break, act dumb, or stand still and listen to the dj then let them be. Who are you to judge? And who makes these rules of what belongs here and what doesn't? Hmmm it must be the drumand bass commitee.
Common now every scene evolves naturally and when u try to prevent things from changing it makes it wack and it stops it from growing into something better, and i'd like to see the jungle scene evolve into a culture that has the longivity and the success that the hihop scene has. So wheather something was there from day one or not is not even the point.
I guess all we need now are signs on the doors of jungle partys that read (NO POPPING OR BREAKING ALLOWED). lets not be so closed minded now shall we kids. |

nobody is making any rules. if you didn't know junglescene is a discussion board where people discuss things. we're not close-minded, we are opinionated. and our opinions differ from yours. we're being real to ourselves and you're being real to yourself. i didn't mean to offend you or your friends
