The South Central-born dance style known as "krumping" is so dynamic that this energetic journey into the heart of the craze begins with a necessary disclaimer that no filmmaking tricks have been used to speed up the motion. Tracing the style from its roots at the "clown dancing" academy of children's entertainer Tommy the Clown through the movement's surprising splinterings and evolutions, award-winning photographer David LaChapelle beautifully captures both the amazing physical feats and unexpected emotional journeys of a group of Los Angeles youths who have turned to dance as a source of pride and a powerful means of self-expression.

According to http://www.lafilmfest.com/tixSYS/filmguide/eventnote.php?EventNumber=3669&view=EventNote ...
The South Central-born dance style documented in Rize is so dynamic that this energetic journey into the heart of the craze begins with a necessary disclaimer that no filmmaking tricks have been used to speed up the motion. The style originated in the routine of children's entertainer Tommy the Clown, who opened Tommy's Hip Hop Clown Academy after the 1992 riots so neighborhood youth could find an alternative to the pitfalls of urban blight: gang and drug activity. The film follows the surprising splinterings and evolutions that have brought the form to its current state where dancers meet in the streets and parking lots of the neighborhood or in huge organized battles to show off their moves.
Rize is explicit in its study of the dance as a redemptive creative force, starting its history of the neighborhood at the 1965 riots and tracing the use of movement to African dance rituals. The dancers, who astonish with their athleticism, are equally frank and articulate when discussing their troubled situations and this outlet for their hopes, fears, and creative energy. But it is the dancing itself—beautifully captured in its raw, pulse-pounding power by award-winning photographer David LaChapelle—that may just bring you to your feet.
