www is cool, but how many of you kids

how many actually find breaks by digging, sweating thru piles of bug s**t, n dust n Andy Williams, or Herb Albert crap at a thrift, yard sale, used record bin etc, till you unearth that gem?
and how many look up the sample faq, or some sample archive site, and order the s**t off E-Bay with daddys Visa?
and how many are into breaks for love of the music, not because Shadow sampled it, or cause it was mentioned that Moby sampled it? i mean you have all the whitey ford trading cards "why not move onto these records i hear are all the rage."
i dont know, i think some fools cheat by leapfrogging steps that I feel are important to TRUE vinyl collectors. and people that love and have respect for artists and their music.

Re: www is cool, but how many of you kids

I do it all the time... I have original pressed vinyl dating back to the early 50's including albums from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Patsy Cline, Andy Williams and a 45 of Elvis Presleys Teddy Bear.

Re: www is cool, but how many of you kids

Swap meets at my local colleges (Cypress, OCC) and I go to the thrift stores as well. Usually I come out with some great stuff, and I usually get good results when I hit up those places.

Re: www is cool, but how many of you kids

I buy a lot of the represses. The Soul Jazz label has some great compilations as well as BBE and Strut.

Sorry I'm not "cool" enough to find the originals or pay a s**tload for 'em either.

Re: www is cool, but how many of you kids

thriftstores were my second home, bt i think in the last 5 years or so it became almost impossible to find good stuff there. and im not willing to pay $100 for a disk on ebay when i can get a 'repressing' for $10. guess im not cool after all, lol.
at least re-issues bring the music to a broader audience (im jst bitter cuz i wished i owned a lot more originals, hahah)

Re: www is cool, but how many of you kids

I certainlly put and still put in my time checking garage/yard sales...In NY I used to go to the Rooselvelt Hotel for their record conventions (a LOT of hip hop guys like de la and the JB''s used to go there) looking for s**t like hustlers convention or Eddie Hazel's solo (s**t that's a HOT record!) I go to enough thrift stores and end up with a s**t load of dusty hands and most of the time for s**tty records, or a couple of novelty records that I THINK I may be able to use....sometimes I get that great record too....the internet certainly opened up the whole world to amaturs...and repressing made a LOT of s**t more availiable that would otherwise be unheard...so I'm not hating on the repress (those 180 grm suckers are hot, but some of the thinner one's suck) SOUL JAZZ is a great f**king label, and so is the Flying Dutchman...so I gots no problem hooking up some of those, however, personally, I just feel better about the record when I knnow its OG, I like that much better, and if the quality and price is right, I ALWAYS prefer to have the original record...those have history...when I get an old Isley Bros record, I can imagine a brother who bought it back in the day, cuz he was a fan of the BAND not the SAMPLE...he opened up the gatefold and would stare at it...kind of like I did with my older brothers Zep and Kiss records...so yeah, I see the piont but I'm not hating on kids who want to buy as much as they can off the net...it's easier than going out...but (I think we had a discussion like this before) in the long term it's probably not as fulfulling as going out and finding it...but then again, identifyng a sample and finding it is a whole other ball game now too...back in the day...I heard a sample on a record and had to figure out where I might have heard it, and play match game with my other records...Id say.."wait, I think I know that sample," then I'd go through ALL my P-funk records until I found it...now the answer is a few keystrokes away...that's the way it is

Re: www is cool, but how many of you kids

with 180g vinyl the grooves are able to be more defined and the sound is more definate....however if you dont play it through super good hifi you wont notice it.

anyways, i started this vinyl fetish of mine by commandeering my parents records and going to record stores and swap meets and every piece of s**t thrift shop south of bakersfield. and you know what? ive found some dope ass s**t. i found a first pressing of bob dylan's first album at a garage sale down the street from my house, i paid one dollar for it. in its condition its worth 80 bucks, and its not in that good of condition. see this is what i enjoy. not just looking for samples, not just coming up without paying much...but getting good music to listen to.

but you know what? after all that, im still not bitter at kids that just started and snatch up a skull snaps record for 2 bills cuz they found out about the break from a website. its because of kids like this that labels are reissuing all these old records in good quality for people to listen to. preserving the music you know? if no one collected them, and payed that kind of dough, the records would be forgotten save for a few savvy people. s**t i'll buy stuff on ebay. i wont pay 100 dollars, but if i see a good deal, i'll snatch it up. with MY visa. its just like searching the back crates of a store. surprisingly enough, alot of people selling s**t on ebay dont know what their stuff is worth. you CAN come up. and anyways, if youre so down for digging, you shouldnt be interested in a skull snaps or syl johnson record cuz theyve been done to death. what im trying to say is, youre not the first, youre not the last. dont be bitter if some kid gets a record easier than you did. better yet, GO on ebay and find those ones you cant find anywhere. it'll make youre day.
