Almost Better Than Sex

I didn't go to this part, but I heard some hilarious reviews about it from some friends... who all went and what did you see / smell?

Personally I saw the whole concept as totally exploitative and raunchy. The drum'n'bass lineup was great, and we wanted to cover it for D2LA, and although the promoter advertised all over this website they never returned my calls or emails about coverage... shady!

I got a friend from SD who went, claimed the DnB room was off the hook.
Also heard there were alot of scantily clad ravers...but remember, this was a rave so it goes with the whole title of the dance.



Additionally some other friends who went said the Hip Hop room was equally as sick as the dnb room.



I'm gonna make the next one for sure. Great line ups.

DNB room was inside the Forum Club. Probably had 250+ people in it. DJ booth was in the corner and was absolutely mobbed with people. Security was pretty lame (except for the guy with dreads dancing in front of the booth as he was "securing" it) and the bartenders were even worse. Sound was BOOMING in there. Craze, Photek, and Shy all KILLED it. Didn't see anyone else. Thought the flyer said "4 fully themed areas". I didn't see any theme to the dnb room. TONS of 1/2 naked girls walking around.

i had a great time (esp. for a rave). the dnb room was RAMMED packed. all the DJs from Steady to Total Science (jo-s, reid, jayvon, infiltrata, shy, photek) killed it that nite. it was a rave so i knew wat i was going to see and it didn't phase me. some kid did knock over the CD-J but it was all due to brockin' out super hard. the VIP area was actually put together pretty well. all in all i really don't have too many complaints about the party itself (from the dnb room perspective). ohh yeah that black security guard with the dreads was dancing HARDCORE!!! Seriously he was cool as s**t (and i mean he was DANCING). the dnb room was not filled with sex or scantily dressed girls, i stayed in there pretyy much so all in all i had fun.

Alright yo, I was there all night and let me tell you it was INSANE!!!! It was hot, sweaty, smelly and BOOOOMMMMIIIINNN!!!! The whole TekDubz family fukkin KILLED it!!!!!!! Photek, Craze, Sharpness & Dre were on point and rawkin the place...XYZ & Jae Stylus the place along with Jo-S and Reid!!
And Shy Fx just murdered it!!! Tune after tune after tune!! And yes the cdj did get knocked over while he was playing!!! It was outta control! There was no security by the stage at all. I'm surpised the whole setup managed to stay up with all the madness!! People wer pushing closer and closer with every drop and by the end of the night a security guard was brought up front toward the end of Shy's set to try and control some of what was going on, but he was no use because he just ended up rawkin out!! 1/2 naked girls everywhere, roll tards posted in the seats of the main room trippin on the lights, your normal rave stuff! Def not what I'm used to when it comes to a massive, but I still had a pretty good time!

I gotta say, despte the fact the posted all over the internest saying the event was almost sold out at 10,000 (maybe 2000 people were there), it was a good time for me and the boys, the set up SUCKED, but it was vibing like a motherf**ker...so we still had a blast rockin out.

Craze and Klever killed the hip hop room with the best of Bmore & Miami bass...not leavin out some of that west coact s**t for us.

D got some great shots...cant wait to see em on the screen

OMG, i had a freaking blast yo' i was in the dnb most of the time, it was insane, i was wildin' out !! craze was soo ill!! qbert was f**kin awesome, he's one of my fave dj's i look up to that fool, so it was great to see him.

i kept getting dragged all over the place, and i'm glad cuz i know i would of been stuck in the dnb room (it does that to me)- so thanx to the heavy hittahz, josh, and tak, lol - good times!!

i didn't get drunk or anything ( except a couple of patron shots afterwards), but i felt great the whole time, the music was soo awesome!!!

this was my first abts show, and i will definately attending next year!!

well it sounds like the djs rocked it (of course) but that the room was small... 250 people made the room packed? that's crazy talk! talk about dissing the dnb djs. reminds me of "the good ol days" when dnb got no love at raves...

suprisingly good. i played every ABTS show thus far and the lot of them were kinda skeevy. but the forum was clean and spacious which enabled me to bypass the sweaty fools w/ no shirts on. no skin slick contact this time around...whew! suprisingly, there wasn't that many half-naked youngsters running around either. i reckon this was due to the 18+ restriction although we all know how well that is regulated. homeboy w/ sci-fi goggles, leather suspenders and superman underwear was the highlight of my evening regardless, the dnb room was rammed all night. i wobbled it out to the max..halfway through my set xyz stepped up to the m.i.c. and the chemistry was on! the v.i.p. room was readily accessable to a selection of white trash beer and "x-tasy" energy drink and plastic bottle vodka conconctions which kept me fueled. johnny boy infildadzie murdered it! photek continued w/ that tekdbz sound and shy fx rounded out the night by keepin it bouncy and smooth.

maybe it was 300 room venue (it was as big as Respect downstairs if u removed the bar. i was happy that because dnb was upstairs it was right across the hall from VIP and CLEAN BATHROOMS were upstairs! yeah it was funny the security guard was brought up to control the crowd, i walked past him and he was like "yo watz this music? watz ur name?", next thing i know he is getting DOWN to Shy FX hardcore. it all in all was a really fun party . . . ohhh lord one bad thing was that parking for non-artists was $22, whew!!! I don't think the promoters had anything to do with that, but man that was a lot of money for some kids...most though parked around Inglewood (in the neighborhood) and walked (though walking in skimpy outfits for the girls [when literally there were real pimps a few blocks down some were getting arrested] couldn't have been safe). But again i don't think the promoter has control of that, that more or less is a city thing (Inglewood trying to cash in). Anywho...

Overall there needed to be some adjustments with the setup and the flow of the place, but for the first time at the forum it turned out pretty well. I actually ended up staying in the turntablist room most of the night. I know it doesnt need to be said, but Q-Bert is so good I dont think he's human. UN-BE-LEAVABLE. Dude played the instrumental to Rapper's Delight, then scratched all the vocals, using a different scratch sound for each MC. At one point I saw Craze, Skribble, Klever and Hymn all standing behind him with their jaws dropped like WTF?!?!
Then when Q got done and Craze got on the mic and said that he and Klever were going on b2b on 4 decks I knew it was all over from there. Soo sick... they dropped a little of everything from 'Whoomp there it is' to 'Organ Doner' by Shadow to 'Rockit' by Herbie Hancock some house to the BMore and the Miami Bass... I even heard 'Nuthin' but a G Thang' and 'Hits from the Bong'... s**t was silly. The little time I spent in the DnB room was Brockin' and the main room seemed to be packed most of the night... Anyone catch Tommy Lee? Curious to hear what that was like...

I caught Tommy Lee at the end I think him and DJ Aero were just spinning prog house b2b it wasn't anything that special. only reason i stayed there for more than 10 minutes was to get pictures of tommy and the girl standing next to me wearing nothing but suspenders for a top (yowzers!!) if i can only manage to get these pictures off my phone i'll post them up

Tommy lee made me laugh, lol.. he's a kool dood, but it was soo funny to see him getting down as a dj, nothing crazy tho, just wierd.

i had a lot of fun here. i normally dont like massives either. took me a minute to actually find the dnb room. i tried upgrading to VIP but since my ticket was comped they wanted like $100 (?) I figured it would just be cheaper to actually buy my alcohol. The drinks were made strong, and the bar was in the dnb room. so i was happy.

ended up blowing out a back tire on the way home on the freeway in the fast lane and fish taled all the way to the other side. luckily there was a wall there to stop me. i slowed down enough to where my car wasnt too f**ked up by the wall, it could've been a lot worse. thank god i was the only one on the freeway. i didnt get home til like 530.

^^glad u are safe man. on the way home from Respect this past Thurs. i hit a cat on the freeway (black cat out of no where), it broke off my fog lamp, i was driving and seeing orange lights from underneath my car . . . it was sparks as the light hadn't detached and was being dragged while i drove. i pulled over, detached the bloody/gut filled light. i am glad i didn't swerve cause where i was on the freeway it wouldn't have ended pretty^^

i didn't want to go at all bc i've heard stories bout the party but wow, am so soso glad you guys took me!!!

there were so many friends there i was pleasantly surprised!

it WAS ONE OF THE BEST times evAR... the dnb room did dissapoint in the sense that i was picturing a big stage which it was not but like danny said the room was vibin and i mean every single dj killed it..

^^yeah everyone in the dnb room were there for the music. no sitting, no crazy light shows, ravers, junglists, heads alike all getting down. i think it also was due in part to that u had to ask "where is the dnb room" and u had to literally find it upstairs, i think this kept this room rockin' with peeps who really truly wanted to be in there^^

My short review. Production was weird, DNB room got the shaft. other 2 rooms were dope. DNB room deserved a nice setup as the others, i think the fact that the dnb room was so small it kept people outside. Reid Speed and Dino in the drum and bass room was tight, watching them in the main room was better! Ron Jeremy pimpin the hoes. Getting to say whats up to XYZ and JAYVON, HOCHI, SHARPNESS, you guys are dope, and thanks chris for helping me mash up to the front with those beers in my hand! Sharpness on the Mic is sick and one of the coolest cats i know. Craze KILLED it as usual. Left craze to catch Q-bert with expectations to see him rip it on the QFO as usual, but NOPE. It was a pure DJ set spinning old school breaks with a bit of scratching, drum scratching and all the other good stuff. mainly playing records tho! sick!!!! Craze and Klever followed up with and equaly amazing set. I spent the majority of my night in that room. Tommy lee was funny. DJ Aero did all the work while Tommy pressed buttonsm turned knobs and danced around. sound effects im guessing. All in all, mixed emotions at first about this party, but when i got home i realized i did have a GREAT time. Mainly due to the music. id go again only if the line up was this good.

I got to the venue at around 7 to sound check and saw that they had a 4 channel house mixer (Vestax PVC-150) on the TURNTABLISM stage. The sound guy (who I dont blame at all for this) told me he'd try to find a scratch mixer for me. So I sat up there until 15 minutes into my set when I just decided I would just mix some records.

I just love preparing for a 2 hour turntablisim showcase then just end up mixing. WHooooooo! Apparently all of the other DJ's brought their own mixers, which in retrospect would have been the move. But all in all I learned a lot and had a lot of fun once i got into my set. I even pulled out some dubstep that the crwod was brockin out to. Stylus that "Sippin on some sizzurp" dubstep mix was for you.

I'll never play another show of that magnintude without a contract/writer again.

oh yeah the dnb room was tight too.

I would like to thank the 3500 plus people who attended the show....

This was a brand new venue for us and everyone and alot of things will be changed for next years event...for instance the way the rooms are layed out and other stuff....

We truely appreciate the support from all DJS, Workers and everyone who promoted the show and attended!

We know the lineup kicked ass, and there was some sound issues.....we arent perfect but each year this event improoves.....

Ended up going to this show last minute to promote after checking Whizard, Clutch and Pawn rip it up at TRUST (those that missed that OC biz were deprived).

Security at the rave was lax by 3am...
probably more concerned with the half-dressed raver girls which made it easy for me and Mantas to walk right in with no hassle to check the vibes.

I thought the DnB room/setup was kinda lackluster for the caliber of talent they booked and didn't seem a proper showcase but it did look like everyone was still having fun so I could only imagine (and now I know after seeing the pics) how crazy it must've been earlier in the night.

Would have been cool to get to The Forum earlier and vibe out but I was content having finally made it to the PROOF BAR in OC.

Funny that the promoter for ALMOST BETTER THAN SEX that I spoke with wouldn't even acknowledge our triangle RESPECT logo was used on their flyer...
but thats another story.
