Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

whats worse than one mc who won't shut up? Five mc's who won't shut the f-up! (i thought jtec was cool though) I appreciate the entertainment value of 5 mc's and the pop lock girls, but kryst let the wonderful music ride for awhile! I thought Dara killed it besides the distractions, and was dissapointed Gridlok was b2b, I was expecting him to turn the club into a washing machine like at funktion, he's my favorite producer. Also I don't appeciate any political message, its a sad time for amerika, two horrible choices....

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

These two new posters must have gone to a completely different party then I went to.

First off production: Production on the main stage was absolutely fantastic with all the screens and visuals. The lighting was on point, all the way through. And the Sound at the key club was f**king amazing. From any vantage point at the club it was crisp and the bass was clean.

The second stage production sounded just perfect and the lighting was just enough to keep perfect ambience in the room. Also the art on the walls was a great touch.

The placed was rammed packed with partiers everywhere I went. Everyone was smiling and dancing throughout the night. I could not believe it was packed by 10:00. Everyone I talked to said it was one of the sickest parties they have ever been to.

I thought all the Deejays murdered the place, especially Db and Odi. It was killer to see AK and Gridlok go back to back.

I drove down from San Francisco for this party. It was worth every mile. What a party that was.

Probably one of the best events I have ever been to.

BIG THE FUCK UP.

Can’t wait till the next one.

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

Have to give up to the man that made this all happen........... Mr. Fox. The event was a perfect production. From the V.I.P. Greenroom to the hyper crowds. This event made its mark in history. It felt good to hear our kind of music and see our community dancing the night away at the Key Club in Hollywood. It truly felt as if we were all stateside superstars that night. Thank You!!

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

Agreed. Great job Freddy! Production was top notch. As far as the emcee thing; we don't usually get 8 emcees on stage at L.A. parties (thank goodness)- so that was pretty cool. Besides each of these emcees individually are among the best in the country. Dre, J-Tec, Dino, ?, Bypass, Re:Pete, XYZ, Ridda, etc. Doesn't happen a lot so once in a while is cool.

Gridlok smashed it.

And I gotta say

J-Tec is the life of the party!
What stage presence. Had us in stitches.

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

Thanks to everyone involved for throwing an excellent event!

I had a blast performing and even more fun just hanging out and enjoying the music. Downstairs was super cool as everyone was playing older stuff, brought back a lot of memories.

As for the MC comments, I think that our MC community had better take a long hard look at what they are contributing to our scene. It looks bad to have 5 MCs on stage. It sounds even worse. Particularly the MCs that were being especially selfish, rapping over other people's verses. Did i hear someone rapping over Dino on his own tune? Tsk Tsk! 1 syllable grunts at the downbeat of every 8 bars does not count as adding to the vibe. It's blatantly obvious that those doing that are just waiting for their turn to shine.

When I was protesting about the number of MCs on stage during Dara, Ak & Gridlok's sets, one told me "This is what you get when you book 10 MCs"

I disagree.

Answer yourself this question. What is a better move as an artist?

1. Trying to get heard over an unorganized bunch of MCs who don't know any of the songs and appear to be rapping at random with no regard as to who is currently flowing or who has the best connection with the crowd.

2. Waiting until you can get a good 10-20 min stint on stage where you and maybe one other MC can actually add something constructive to the show

I think I know which one any smart performer would choose.

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

Had a greaT time... The Mc thing was a bit much on the main floor but downstairs there was a nice intimate vibe, Phantom 45 took me waaaaaaaaay back and Db smacked it just in time for Odi to come in and destroy. Didn't catch much of the upstairs as was watching the system downstairs....as for the no bass comment hmmmm. I opened upstairs and shook my toons no less than three times off the stage! At points the bass was rumbling so loud it was causing the cd player to skip!
Downstairs was bumping too so maybe you were next door at The Rainbow bar smoking bowls with B-real and playing the card machine with Lemmie from Motorhead cos at the party where I was it was bumpin'. Big up Freddie & crew for the professionalism and hospitality. Nice show.

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

First up big upz to LAX and Freddy Fox for a great event at a great venue.

Second up on the mc tip, i will be the first to admit that it probably was in excess a bit (and me being at fault too). That being said in at least my history of going to dnb events in LA (since 1999) this was a first with that many mcs on stage. Maybe 1 time is 2 times too many for some and for some they just don't like mcs or particular mcs etc..

Since you asked Origin, i respectfully think that mcs (me being one of them) DO look at what they contribute to the scene (and it is not just on the mic). People like dino and dre constantly doing tunes, UA Podcast by Dino, J-Tec releasing numerous Maximum Moves cds, Ridda down in SD doing successful mixes and excellent videography of shows, Blitz in DD does a lot of werk, MC ? is pretty much a legend in LA, Kemst has thrown a couple events also rocks it over dubstep, Werd does Upgrade evry Friday, Pete makes music, Bypass makes music etc. and more. I think the representation by MCs in our scene is good because it branches beyond just the stage...and i think people recognize this (be it js.comers, ravers, casual dnb heads, hardcore dnb heads, producers, djs, promoters etc.) and even on stage i would say we have pretty good mcs who can hold a verse, a tempo, have good stage prescene and something peeps who need/prefer dnb with mcs can gravitate towards. All this said we know our place in dnb, it is no secret we are on the lower end of the totem pole, and i think for the most part we are very cognisant of our position in the scene, however in our niche (which has been carved thru years of being hated on and not respected to refining our skills) i think we all are doing the scene a good service more so then a disservice.

I bet ya this nite was more of an abboration then the norm. I am sure the next time the right adjustments will be made. I ain't knocking opinion (cause i have mine too on the situation with 5 mcs on the stage) just saying that 1 show don't make or break "what the mc community is contributing to the scene".

nothing is taken personal by me i just wanted to respond to ur statement Origin. again all just my opinon and p.o.v. of 1 mc in 'the scene'

Well I have to say I'm shocked, typically a detrimental viewpoint on JS gets slammed by tha fam, but you have shown to be really open minded, and I hate to say anything negative, but that was my honest take...I've seen enough shows to know the difference and I think MC's are important as hype men and to propell the beat, nothing against any of the MC's in particular, I've seen you guys many times. Every track has its breakdown and rebuild, there are no dynamics if people just cram it. Of course the venue, sound and lights were superb....at the end of the day I'm just someone who loves dnb, its not just dance music to me....

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

word some people see us (mcs in dnb) as hype men, others actually stand there to hear our lyrics (i call em 'mc trainspotters'), others want us to shut the hell up, others want us to just ride rhythms fast others want it hip hop tempo etc. at the end of the day u will go crazy trying to do wat others want so we try to do wat we each feel comfortable in doing. still with all that it doesn't mean it is good, but i know one man's trash is another man's treasure and i know some peeps i talked to really liked the show (others obviously thought the mcn' was too much). Actually due to the show i kindof now want to do a mc convention party at The Key Club so u (the party goer) knows going in what to xpect...i am very opinionate but always respect the opinions of others.

had a wonderful!!!!!!!! time. showed up early and was one of the last to leave... literaly.
in my buzzed up thinking... I was gettin a bit annoyed with all the jabber from the exessive # of mc's on stage at once. sometimes we gotta just let the misic speak for itself. nonetheless, I love myself some killa mc-ing and got it... just a bit of an overdose..... LOL.
maybe i'm just a bit of an old skooler... what can i say. But THANK YOU everyone. I was sooooo excited to see some of my faves from back in the day - danny - ak-db and Especially PHANTOM! but my local boys KILLED THE SHIT AS WELL. its soo nice to have it all in one place...
cant wait for the next one...

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

Thank you for the well thought out response, XYZ.

What I meant by "Taking a hard look at what you are contributing to the scene" goes beyond artistic accomplishments offstage. What an MC contributes to the scene is also how they represent themselves and the music at any given show, with particular importance placed on shows such as massives, and fine events such as Stateside that occur on holiday weekends in one of the most prestigious parts of the country for club culture.

You speak for drum and bass with every single word that enters the microphone, is drum and bass MCing about showing off and how much stage time you get? Or is it more about your connection to the crowd and the respect you give the music and the person playing it? 5 MCs on stage the whole time makes me think the former is more important. That's all I'm saying.

This is not a new subject, this has been going on since I first started playing parties.
With drum and bass in the state it's currently in, I think it's time for the scene as a whole to rethink how we present ourselves to the world. I'm doing my part.

I would also like to clear something up. I LOVE playing with MCs, I try to have one or two MCs I respect at every show I play. That said, my comments are not coming from a place of simply disliking MCs. I think we are so close to getting it right, why not do so? Ask yourself every time you get onstage, "Am I making this a better party?" Is the DJ communicating with me? Is the crowd responding to things I say other than "Make some Noise!"? "Is the DJ happy about how I am performing right now? Is he visibly upset? And, by far the most important question any MC should be asking themselves "Is someone else talking right now?" (Vocal tune or other MC)

My comments only come from the love of the music and knowing how amazing a dnb show can be with the right combination of DJ, MC, VJ, Promoter, Crowd & Venue. Don't be the weakest link in the chain of a wicked party.

=origin

PS. I would also like to make it clear that I am not making any of these comments toward any one particular MC.

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

I FULLY agree with you origin, I think all the MC's are great. The organization was just off, they should have put two MC's with each dj or something like that. I think towards the end with the dancers and all the MC's it was just overwhelming and it totally overtook the whole dj/music thing. And yes the bass was off for a lil while, downstairs was legit but upstairs was a little quite at times.

My main beef is with that Obama stuff, I do not want to pay for that or see that. Wear your Obama tee's or watever, just don't put it on screen with the scary socialist propaganda looking portraits.

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

There are certain things in life that inspires me, such as, being involved in a defining moment, creating something that lives beyond your existence, or inspiring a movement.

For me is what most amazing was to have all of these US artists under one roof. I had many deep conversations with a lot of the artists involved. One common theme amongst them was that this event re-inspired them. Most of the guys have 10, 15 and 20 years under their belt. Sometimes they need to be re-inspired.

I want to thank all the people that showed up who supported the event and brought the house down. I hope everyone enjoyed the event and all the hard work that was put into it.

A very special thanks to my partner in this event, Nuha who busted her ass and really grinded to make this event a success.

I want to thank all the deejays who threw down, all the sets were amazing. Extra special thank you to Sam and Pure Filth, you were clutch all the way through. The sound was amazing. XYZ you’re an ambassador to this music. To APX1 your a hell of a road partner and confidant. Also a very special thanks to Daniel from Jungle Riddim who helped to run that main stage like a champion and to Master Dome Matt who came through on so many levels. A shout out to Josh Mayhem who supported us all the way through and blessed the venue with a bunch of sick mixes. A thank you to MCMC, I learned alot from him when we ran together.

I want to thank all the emcees who rocked the spot. For me I love emcees, this is why we booked them all. I believe that the emcee is an integral part of an event.

We took some amazing interviews with most of the artists which will be edited and narrated.

As for Barack Obama, that was designed to inspire a movement.

Shicet if you ever see me out and about come say what's up to me. I want to give you your money back.....

We all made history.

LAX

ps. Can you keep a secret.

Look out for a very special

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

me and ak had alot of fun! it was awesome getting to play a good show that i got to drive to instead of fly to! the mc thing i think everything has been said already. everyone that was mcing on the night are talented guys and i've done sets with most of you individually so i know what you all are capable of. all i can say is you know what, even 5 mcs coulda been cool except you guys weren't reading eachother right alot of times and rapping over tunes with vocals and stuff. it was very exciting on stage and i think most of you just got wrapped up and carried away. for those those in attendance just look at it for what it was, a nite for the stateside talent to let loose, we went too far, but it was cause of the excitement of the music. i could see the looks on the mcs faces and ya know what? they f**king love this music so much it makes em nuts, can we all relate?! be more careful next time, all good.

massive thanx to freddy foxx for doing this. you have my utmost respect. stateside dnb is here to stay!!

Big ups to Mr. Fox and Nuha for bringing together all these dj's from all over the states, under one roof.

Key club is excellent venue and really makes the L.A. drum and bass scene look good.

Sound system wasnt killing my ear drums in the main room, and was pretty warm in the downstairs room.

As for the MC's It was great to see all you guys but maybe next time make up time slots or something of the sort, instead of having everyone going all at the same time.

BIG UPS LAX, cant wait to see what ya got in store for secret night.

Saturday night @ the Key Club was WICKED!
Bit of a drive, but def worth it.
The sound in both rooms was great, and the vibes were thick.

Thank you Freddy for everything, and to Gridlok for the goodies. The "Break the System" cd is OFF THE HOOK!
Everyone had dope sets and the MC's were def doin their thang, just maybe a lil to much.
But you could see that they were feeding off the crowd and just trying to give back.

The dancers were doin it BIG!

Heres the link to some pics ai took.

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

MC problems? Hell...I had the stage to myself until 9:30pm..lol! If those of you that are barking about too many MCs would've came early (and properly supported ALL of the DJs), you coulda had a nice intimate set with some of the legends in the game that had to play early to accommodate other bookings! ;-)

I personally wanna give mad shouts to LAX Ent, Freddy and everyone else that was involved with makin this event pop off...It literally broke my heart to have to leave this event to play another and not get to see what was to me the equivalent of an All-US WoDnB here in the capital of the US DnB Movement!

(Origin, thanks for letting me come up and help out on the main stage bizness! and deffo shouts to mis hermanos APX & CRS...I wish I didn't have to drive to San B, otherwise we woulda be rockin s**te Ghetto-fabbo!)

Shouts to the main stage crew for dialing me in and gettin the funky reverb n tap delay goin, gave me that rub-a-dub vibe all over again! And of course, nuff respect to tha big man with tha van o sound...Sam XL, that PF Sound aint no joke! BOOM!

"As for Barack Obama, that was designed to inspire a movement."

I think you should inspire people by educating them on his policies, not just by flashing his picture. That forces his message onto uneducated voters, or maybe thats what you want.

OBAMA loves DnB. Vote or Die.

When I saw Nas last week, he said "Obama loves hip-hop!", laaame. Is that what were really deciding our candidates on now?

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

I knew before we ran the piece on Obama I would have offended people. I cannot say sorry because I am not and I cannot say that I regret it, because I don’t.

Life is more then just a party. Stateside was more then just a party.

Sometime a person has to do things they believe in even though they know that they are going take on retaliation from the opposition. That is the beauty of our country because we have the right to disagree.

I also have the right to my freedom of speech as you do yours.

I know that we cannot have a ninety nine year war, we should pursue diplomacy instead of war, that we should open diplomacy with enemy foreign nations, that health care should be affordable or guaranteed, that we must put power back into the United Nations, that the Patriot Act is in violation of our Constitutional rights, that our economy has suffered tremendously during the last eight years, that “no child left behind” is a complete failure, social security is going to be bankrupt, that our veterans need to be taken care of, that we need renewable sources of energy, we need an end to the partisan and bickering in Washington, that we need to address issue of poverty and the environment and for those reasons I support Obama.

Sometimes you have to stand up for what you believe in.

Wow. I had a fantastic time, from the crowd to the DJ's to all the MC's--everyone had such a good vibe and was so very friendly to us the whole time. I especially enjoyed brocking out with my boy Danny the Wildchild in the basement. Craziness!

Freddy Foxx really took a chance with this party, and I was honored to be part of it.

(Really puts a s**t vibe on the whole thing, though, to hear Origin say I as an MC need to think about what I'm contributing to the scene. Trust, I think about it every single day.)

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

Thats great that you are interested in politics and have a political figure that you support, however, flashing blatant political propaganda (regardless of good intentions) is not something that belongs at parties. Politics and the troubles of the world are around us constantly, and people come to these parties and shows to escape from that, even if just for a few hours. Instead simply enjoying the artists, we are being subtly brainwashed into supporting your candidate. You are not educating voters; you are rallying them blindly in support of a new socialist America.

Oh and fyi: Obama voted for the PATRIOT Act...

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

Somehow I missed all that political stuff going on. By the time I arrived there were 5 mcs on stage was a bit of a change from the usual. It wasn't bad, but wasn't off the chain dope either. Not to offend anyone. I had an awesome time @ Stateside and I enjoyed all the performances and the Mcs [but imo I prefer each on his/her own] but that's just my preference. Loved the vibe and the crowd. I missed the end of AK's set, but that was my own fault. Getting all juiced all night had paranoia kickin' in and somehow it became a mandatory goal that I leave and retrieve my key from valet before 1:45 [later found out that um I didn't have to, they would've waited atil a little while after 2] Valet was mucho cheapo [$10! ] .. thought that was pretty dope [compared to what I've paid @ other spots]. The staff @ the Key Club was super friendly.
Sprained my left ankle and skinned my right knee and got banged up a little bit being up front and center [for a bit I felt like I was at a metal show]. Great night.

2 thumbs up on the lighting as well.

I respect that.

According to mrfreddyfoxx ...

Sometimes you have to stand up for what you believe in.

Why not use a party to bring political awareness to something you believe in? It's better then sitting on the couch moaning and bitching about the government and not doing sh&t about it. Be a revolutionary and do something. So yes I commend you for that Freddy.

Party was sick. I had a really good time ! All the talent was illy! DARA and everyone else smashed it! We got so much talent on the STATESIDE ...I'm lovin these type of events. So when's the next one?

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

honestly i think everyday we are all subjected to 10,000,000 advertisements and really I don't care if there was footage or a picture of Obama or Clinton or McCain or USA Flags or 'hardcore junglizm War footage or Jesus or Buddah or Africa or Europe or Drumz Clothing or BAPE clothing footage or not. Seriously if u can tune out the 10,000 billboards u see everyday just tune it out...i thought it was "all about the music" cause if so then why does the visual images bother you (or let alone why even watch the DJ or face the stage since u can look to the left and still hear the music). Hell i have seen porn shown at shows, now that may cross a line (and may be illegal in terms of lewd public exposure or something), but the "standard" dnb footage over the years are war, death, crazy s**t etc. (which i like to an extent, but even that if it bothers me i tune it out).

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

Yo prey if you're directing those couch comments at me I just want to let you know that I bet i've done far more to change my country than you have even contemplated. As of right now, 19 years old, I am currently elected onto the Santa Barbara County Central Committee, I founded two organizations at my university promoting the ideas of peace, liberty, and limited government, was campaign manager for the Ron Paul campaign in Santa Barbra, and been invited to work a $5k a month job traveling the country starting up liberty minded organizations at different universities when I graduate. In fact, I do not even own a couch.

I love drum and bass. I love peace and I love politics. However, I do not believe that drum and bass parties are the time and place for such things, and I especially don't want to be subjected to more propaganda in the one place that I am simply looking to have fun at.

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

I wonder if everybody who promoted this party knew they were also promoting Barack Obama? If this were a Barack rally from the start people should have been informed instead of dropping it on them last minute. My $.02

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

Who said it was a Barack Obama rally? Because u show a picture of him on the video screens? And no one is questioning anyone saying they didn't like it, i am just saying why not tune it out like we all do the 1 billion other ads thrown our way everyday. Like i said at some parties visuals consist of war time footage, buildings blowing up, soldiers marching, armeggedon footage etc. y no complaints on that and why take a picture of a Presidential politician so seriously? I personally tuned it out till it was pointed out to me and i don't care if Hilary or McCain would've been up there. I think it would be different if ur $$$ was going towards his campaign and u learned this post paying cause that indirectly would apply that u support him.

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

Epic night SEEN?!?! Got a little messy at the end but the turnout seemed good, all crews were getting along, and the sound was sooooo tight (especially downstairs so props to Sam). As for the Obama bizness, I missed it either downstairs or smoking, but it hardly seems like a reason to get your panties in a bunch. Can't wait for the next one Freddie! Safe

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

No one really saw it because it was ran twice 30 seconds each....

a total of 1 minute out of 420 minutes.

But, to strike a good debate about these issues on this board means that the one minute was powerful enough.

Re: STATESIDE - UNITED STATES DRUM and BASS

you all are starting to be worse than a knitting circle... Did anyone leave after they saw the Obama video? I don't think so. So if you didn't care that much then why do you care now.

It all comes down to the music and the music was amazing.

Big Ups! to Freddy believing in something/someone and having the strength to share it with us. As you can see from this thread, what having an opinion get you.

Myself am not an Obama supporter..
