Re: Is it possible to scratch on a Pioneer mixer?
all crossfaders have a curve, the question is what kind of curve is it. the curve on the 500 is shaped like the bottom of a bowl in that it gradually curves upward from the center, which means that if you very slowly moved the fader over, your track would fade out to nothing smoothly. this isn't at all ideal for scratching with, but I'm sure you and your crazy skills can make do
the 600 has an adjustable curve that includes a curve for scratching (a much sharper curve so that when you open the fader even a tiny bit, the other channel plays at full volume). |

Its ok for scratching until you want to do more advanced techniques. Im wanting to sell mine right now and get a different mixer, one with an adjustable crossfader curve and a crossfader that doesnt feel so damn flimsy. |

all faders have curve, yes, but not all faders have an adjustable curve.
the 500 is no good for crabby things because of the lack of adjustable curve. the 6 i believe does have an adjustable fader (?) |

i've tried some scratchin on them before and it sounds good, but if your style is more "mix" oriented then get it greg, my style requires more of a 2 channel simple battle mixer so it depends on how u mix. I GET FIRST DIBS ON TRYING! j/k |

Re: Is it possible to scratch on a Pioneer mixer?
yeah you can scratch with the 500.
contrary to popular belief, you can crab with the fader. make sure its extremely well lubricated because the curve is very very very very long. the cross and line faders do take a while to break in .. probably like a month before the action is REALLY smooth.
transforming with the phono/line switch is fine as long as you dont put too much torsion pressure on the switch (pushing too much ina n upwards or downwards manner will make it really loose)
and no, the knobs to the side of the fader dont get in the way. learn some hand control. |

Re: Is it possible to scratch on a Pioneer mixer?
turn your decks 90 degrees counter clockwise - makes for a tighter setup [its all about speed baby] and it gets the arm out of way. [and it doesnt cost you anything] also needles make a big difference - use what the pros use. also flip the weight at the end of the arm [and push it all the way in] to maximize the pressure on the needle. buy a couple break records [anything from dirtstyle - which is Qberts gig].. most of all, have patience. it takes many years to master skratching. |

Re: about that allen & heath: slapinfunk
the 500 is a piece of crap. if you are looking for something cheaper for scratching get one of the Staton SK series. They start at $150 and up and the fader is pretty nice, it looks dope, and my friend has had a SK2 for over a year and it has stood up nicely.
however if you are gonna spend more than $500 than just buy the Rane 56. that s**t is definitely the nicest s**t on the market for soundquality and scratching |

Re: about that allen & heath: slapinfunk
I started back in '86 when there were no scratch mixers. There was one Gemini, with the wood plating, and Numark made a couple of mixers. Other than that your choices were limited to what you could make at Radio Shack. So for all the DJ's who "need" to use a particular mixer, or they can't do the gig, GET REAL!!! Real DJ's can adapt to any situation......survival of the fittest |

Re: about that allen & heath: slapinfunk
well... i didn't start in '86... but in '92... which still predates curved faders and such.... and I was cuttin on belt drives and a pyramid mixer...
so I agree... you can cut on anything...
but I am a performer... and I want to sound my BEST whenever I perform... nothing is worse than getting out there and not being able to really flex like you want too because the gear is s**tty, or the tables are not on a sturdy surface... or I can't hear s**t from the monitors... all of those things wil effect my performace... and if nothing else that will just dissapoint me...
it's music... not the army.... do the best with what you have... but there's not shame in getting better gear... |

No need for doing that. Unless you want to eat the hell out of your records.
You can keep the weights turned normal and scratching isn't a problem. Some peole like to flip the weights around, but there is no need to.... |
