Soooo not trying to start a Mac vs PC debate but ...

It just occurred to me WHY macs are the best computers for audio (in my humblest of opinions).

Think about it, if a vendor designs a sounds card for a PC, how many mother boards does it have to test before it's considered solid? How many PC motherboards are out there? And they're all different!

With a Mac, there's one motherboard, so, hardware that's designed for a mac, is just that, designed for one piece of hardware, and that's it!

This occurred to me while reading a post by one of the TC Electronic support staff on a power core issue. Here's what was said:

"We also experienced a whole raft of new issues when we opened the platform up to PC users - a quick scan across the forum will show that there seem to be a lot more PC-based problems than Mac. This also applies to the motherboard/bootup issue Spectrum is often the be heard referring to Yes, we know this is an issue for some users. Unfortunately we are uunable to test every mobo, chipset, etc etc. Yes, we know this is frustrating. We are sorry that we have been unable in some cases to get every user working exaclty the way they would like to. However we have been able to get the vast majority of users up and running. "

Mac's just adhere to a certain standard, and that it. So, if hardware companies design something to work w/ a mac, it'll work on ANY mac.

Please don't think I'm dissing PC's. I use PC's all day, they're awesome and allow for flexibility that Macs can't even come close to. I'm just strictly talking about Audio.

And, macs aren't THAT expensive, check an Imac, or Emac! they're fast enough now to run most professional audio software out there AND they come w/ a monitor built in.

Re: Soooo not trying to start a Mac vs PC debate but ...

plus, macs are pretty.

i got a good deal on a wicked hand-built PC (best f**king $200 i ever spent, it came in an aluminum case and was designed by this compsci student i met to be overclocked, it just needs better fans)...

but i'm still gonna get a mac for all my audio in the end. ultimately i just wanted a good pc so that i could have a UAD-1. heh.

not to mention that a mac will last twice to 3 times as long as a PC. (don't have to constantly keep buying new outdated hardware)

Thats a bargin in my book.

Re: Soooo not trying to start a Mac vs PC debate but ...

Be aware though...the G5's have a noise issue. Chirping and beeping that is audible out of the pci slots and firewire ports. There's a workaround w/ CHUD dev tools. Seems as if the beeping and static goes away significantly, not completely, when you disable NAP mode. meaning, the noises seem to come about when one of the processors on a dual-proc machine goes to sleep. I haven't contacted tech support yet to set up a service appointment yet but will keep you updated. If anyone else has been experiencing this issue w/ a dual proc g5, hit me up. I'd like to know how you're handling it.

trust me, if all sorts of technical problems stand in the way of you being able to write or use the gear you want to use, then you start to care pretty quick.

Re: Soooo not trying to start a Mac vs PC debate but ...

Yes, but this just emphasizes the main difference between Mac's and PC's. Along time ago PC's were opened up, across the board, to promote third party manufacturing. Mac's, went the opposite direction, and have always kept most hardware manufacturing in-house, or very limited. It's true this produces less errors in Mac Hardware, but it also produces the huge price difference between PC's and Mac's.

Re: Soooo not trying to start a Mac vs PC debate but ...

to a great extent, you do get what you pay for. it's pretty weak that you have to fuss over drivers and compatibility issues etc. with a pc. you get pcs cheaper but there's a lot of potential headaches in store.

mac stuff is expensive as f**k, yes, but soooo well thought-out. generally i've found macs are more stable, too.

Re: Soooo not trying to start a Mac vs PC debate but ...

Like I said, I don't want this to be a debate about what's better. I think both platforms have their merits.

What I was trying to say, and didn't really articulate was, I understood WHY mac had sorta become the standard for a long time. Only recently did the PC sorta catch up.

It'd be much easier for a manufacturer to make a soundcard that worked well on one platform than a soundcard that worked on several other kinds of motherboard/processor combos.

Anyhow, I'm just rambling =)

oh yeah, almost forgot! Joey, send yours back dude, they should take care of that for you! I've seen this on a few other mac only sites, it's basically a problem w/ the 1.8 G5's! CALL THEM!

Re: Soooo not trying to start a Mac vs PC debate but ...

had my g5 dual for about 3 months now and have no problems with any kind of noise or beeping. i run logic 6 with motu 896 hd. sound card. even my little 15" lcd i mac worked well. if you use logic you have to use a mac since i dont think they have logic for pc. the only problem i have is updating logic every f*&ken other month. F%$k i think its logic 7 or 8 now.

Re: Soooo not trying to start a Mac vs PC debate but ...

I love these debates! everybody always rags on what they don't use, and calls it a piece of crap because they have no idea how to use it!

Basically, Apple makes it easy for you to weed out bad hardware/software combinations on their platform by offering only 1 combination.

With the PC, you find that knowledge yourself. If you know alot about PC's and don't just buy some random piece of crap put together by a moron, it works flawlessy.

At that point it comes down to which operating system you like better. Doing a little research instead of blindly falling in love with marketing BS will allow you to find the best machine for the products you would like to use.

Some software titles work better on PC architecture, and some work better on Mac architecture. The same goes with hardware.

Anyone who says that one machine is simply better than the other is just ignorant.
