los angeles rec'ding school

I was looking into this...
does anyone have any expericne
or an opinion about this place?
(LA recording school)...

the curriculum centers around Protools...
(i know, Industry Standard)

I was wondering if there were other schools that use Logic instead...?

Re: los angeles rec'ding school

graduated from there. only part of the course is for pro-tools. you also learn & have total access to a neve, ssl, oxford, & a bunch of dmxr100's. i liked it a lot. i went a couple years ago- since then they moved into a new building & upgraded some things. no logic then. not sure about now. if you enroll & are into electronic music talk to steve miller- he records a lot of the moonshine artists + he's a cool cat.

Re: los angeles rec'ding school

I graduated from LARS in 05'. I would have to say to stay away from the place. You are better off shadowing someone or finding an internship on your own, then hacking up the $15k+ for tuition(I paid that amount, it must be more now). Their job placement is a joke, they had a 3 page list of "jobs". They also had a stack of papers with jobs from sites you can find on your own (i.e. craigslist, mymusicjob, etc.). They claimed to have a 90% job placement rate, bulls**t! That is the main reason why I even went there. The curriculum was a joke, I think a monkey could graduate from there. :p You are taught the basics of everything(mixing, recording, using compressors, eq). I feel that they didn't really go in depth with anything. They were bought out by Full Sail, and I was there while they were making the transition. MAYBE things are different now, but I doubt there are any drastic changes. Do some research on post facilities or recording studios that interest you and get an internship. Hopefully it turns in to a job, if not it was fun picking up lunch and emptying the trash cans right? BTW, Steve Miller definetely knows his s**t. Coolest teacher ever!

Re: los angeles rec'ding school

hmmm, ok, a bad review...

Internship - unfortunatly, i am not in a position to do that...got to work...
so its a community college or a specilized school...There are alot of studios in the LA area...just need to investigate more...

Re: los angeles rec'ding school

Same here man. Working for free is not cool. Studios thrive off of free work. Some studios claim that they advance their interns, but they are mainly looking for free work. They either want you to work for free or be way over qualified. For a few months, after I graduated, I worked my day job and spent my free time trying to find a paying recording job. I eventually got burnt out and stopped. I sent out my resume to the places I wanted to work at. The post house that I was the most interested in called me back. I went in for an interview, was suppose to get a 2nd one(with the big boss), and played phone tag for about 3 weeks. I just gave up. Well do what you have to do man. good luck!

Re: los angeles rec'ding school

job placement is good. you complete your resume in school- some studios & related jobs actually look to the school for finding employees. i was working way before i graduated. those that don't look to the school still recognize that you have already been trained to do 90% of the job you're inquiring about. also if you do a descent job in the studio\school they'll give u a personal recommendation, which can make all the difference in a business where a large part is who you know.....although you still gotta intern...but internships are part of the cirriculum. so you can chalk it up to school time.

is it all worth about $15k? yes & no

nothing beats hands on experience but if you're really dedicated & put in the time, you're probably better off buying a really good book or 2, putting in some quality studying, & then go do a couple of internships until you find one you like. then stick with it for however long & you'll most likely get the job.
