Re: commix/icicle/lomax style bass
The key to their sound IMHO is elegant simplicity. Really, all of their basslines are basic sine waves w/ LFO modulation, coupled with badass engineering.
You can get their bass sounds out of any synth really, but the thing that really makes their stuff stand out is how well the low end is engineered. Big sub bass sidechained with big kicks... |

Re: commix/icicle/lomax style bass
man i love these tunes...but there really isnt anything complex goin on Bass wise....just get some decent samples...old ones...use a lil lfo on your filter cutoff...and reasample it a couple times...maybe on with a pitch envelope...these are all really basic sounds to acheive IMO |

so i see what you mean - load a bass sample into kontakt (i use cubase) and resample and lfo on the cutoff.. i guess it comes down to experimenting haha |

Re: commix/icicle/lomax style bass
Start with SINE or SQUARE (around 50hz or so) - Add filter (I use SVF) and filter out everything except about 20 percent (you only want to keep the low end of the sound) Turn your RES up all the way on the filter. Turn up the envelope amount a bit (mess with this to get the setting you want) Enable the LFO on the filter and slightly adjust the AMT and SPEED to get desired wobble. Also use the PITCH to adjust down manually or automate to your desired amount via envelope. |

Re: commix/icicle/lomax style bass
Try it out and have fun! There are definitely other techniques to get that bass sound, but that should get you started. Most of what they are doing is based on a low Filter Cutoff frequency, slight modulation amount, and LFO amount and speed. Mess with these settings on your sampler/synth until you get the desired wobble you are looking for. If you need some bass samples, let me know. I have some good ones I can send over for you on AIM. EZ!

Re: commix/icicle/lomax style bass
there are great explanations here for basslines however...
Try actually learning the ways of sounds and synthesis rather than asking for a quick explanation and standing on the shoulders of other producers. Through the year we've seen many producers on this site work hard to learn the ways of production on their own and ultimately learning rather than asking for the answers in the 'back of other folks books' is going to be way more rewarding. Who knows? you just may come up with something original and that's what labels & other artists are truly looking for - isn't it?
*Albino is deffo cool.
*Listen to Flinch & Xenocide, they've got the right idea if you wanna copy off their homework instead of doing your own.
*Don't you work with Uncle Festa? He's knows whats up from what we've seen so far.
Bottom line tho - Come original.

go to the grid man, ha ha ha, I stopped coming here for advice ages ago....lol. unless its Andy explaining something its usually worthless.....all opinions not many facts.....you may also want to ask the producers themselves. I have had good luck asking people how they do something specific which leads me to other interesting sounds when I am trying to duplicate what I heard. And there is not a damn thing wrong with duplicating to learn. You dont write new songs when your learning guitar, you play someone elses that you already know and like......

the grid is cool - but you can learn for yourself too.
And I dunno I wrote my first song 'I dont care john wayne' on guitar when I was 3 or 4, and recorded it, so I dunno about having to copy to learn. Doing 'remixes' of other tunes and turning em into D&B is kinda the same thing.. Some folks like reggae turned into D&B, but much of the reggae community does not. Same with hip hop remixes, those styles of D&B as a whole suit mainly D&B headz. Coming up with original ideas and melodies (much like clipz, tc, dillinja and others) is the true test of hit making in this game - just check who's sellin records and who's not lately.
But anywayz, lots of good points on this thread I think - NOW whats up with the battle for Grilled Cheese!?
