Recording Vinyl tips..

I need a good streamlined way to record my vinyl to my computer, make the files as loud as i can, and move on the next.. I want to do it properly so i never never never never have to do such a tedious thing ever again in my life.

PLEASE if anyone has done this succesfully let me know whats up..

the best sounding thing i have done, is record into soundforge, normalize (the music preset, not the LOUD one) then "wave hammer" that bitch.. sounds pretty close to a clean loud crisp copy... any other suggestions?

ALSO.. what is everyones feeling on ripping all your stuff to 320's compared to FLAC or some lossless audio codec??

Some time ago, I made a post on the same subject. You might be able to find something useful there.

Also, are you talking about ripping your vinyl to 320kbps? I only deal with Wav files when it comes to samples. I only use mp3 samples as temps, until I can track down a good version(cd/vinyl) and record it properly.

naw im actually talking about my vinyl collection. for serato use.


wavs always go into my tunes too.. not really talking about production.. didnt make that clear i guess.

I think the method your currently using is your best bet. TEDIOUS AS FUCK tho!

I say get a purpose-built phono preamp.

Guitar center sells a $40 preamp by ROLLS (It's small and red if you go asking about it)
that sounds great. Just hook your turntable up to the preamp then the preamp into your sound card. Record.

I think running through a DJ mixer crushes the life out of your records (except maybe something like the high end Allen & Heath Mixers, but even then the signal is going through EQ and Filters)

My bad. I never done the whole laptop dj thing, someone else could probably give you a better answer. When in doubt though, record at a superb setting(48k 24bit wav, I think flac is unnecessary) and then you can always convert to 320kbps mp3. Keep those wavs on some backup dvds to free up space.

Oh and that little red preamp looks nice. It outputs to 1/4 plugs too, nice! I might have to go pick one up and test it out.

We are selling terabyte drives at my work now, so i might pick one of those bad boys up for backup.

No technical tips here, but keep this in mind: If you're selling the vinyl after you rip it, make sure to create backups!!! I had a friend who ditched his entire vinyl collection after ripping it only to have a drive crash claim most of the tunes less than a year later...Your best bet would be to dump 'em to DVD or an external drive that does nothing but sit in a closet somewhere.

I just found out if you want to rip your vinyl theres a function in serato that lets you do this. And since your decks go directly into the serato interface it bypasses your mixer and goes straight into your comp. I forget exactly how to do it off the top of my head but my roomate does it all the time.

Recording directly into serato works well, for ripping vinyl you can go straight from the turntable, or run the turntable through a mixer/compressor/eq and record at a line level, either way you should, ideally, have a clear record and good needle. There are no export preferences however, everything gets saved as a 16bit stereo AIFF @ 44.1 khz. It's probably not the best way but its probably the easiest.

ps, the new version of serato software has ALOT of dope new features

i just recently started implementing serato into my sets to play my own tunes. but i doubt i will ever sell my vinyls. those are relics that tell the story of my life musically. they will go to my grandkids. even if i have to pay to store them somewhere i won't ever give them up.

totally what origin said, ive been rippin s**t thru my mixer for a while and it often dosent work out like i want it to. i'm also thinkin that you should use some ortofons for the project, they are the most well balanced needles frequency-wise ( shures are too warm for rippin ) ;

Check out the new Ortofon Arkiv Cartridges. They are made specifically for that reason. We have them at guitar center as well as a cool phono pre made by Gem.

actually, you record in from the line in on serato...

you take the record out on your mixer, and plug it into the box, and set that to line and record...

its pretty easy, but doesnt bypass the mixer..

phono preamp is def the cleanest way to go

ehhh... if you modded your equipment to use balanced connectors, that would probably be cleaner. but that would probably also be a waste of money.

i got the M-Audio Transit:


Has optical in/outs and it sounds amazing. I did two needledrops, one with and one without, and you can really tell the difference between the two. The USB input gets the best sound back into the computer.

Less than $100 too. Totally worth it.

mmkay. got a preamp. recording at a very decent level.

would anyone suggest normalizing the wavs after recording? for example through soundforge the "music" normalization setting?

anyone do this?

i picked up that Rolls preamp, and it runs to loud for my recording.

thank goodness my mixer has the ability to turn off the eq features..

my console program for my motu has a level i can adjust. i was happy i had to turn it down!

you normalize the wav? or do any processing to make it pop?

no.. i just put it in as close to clipping as possible...

ive found that the pop removal thing changes the overall sound quality. for me anyways

grr yeah i was worried about that. and you get a loud enough recording? compared to other mp3s say you would buy online?

yeah...
keep it just under clipping, and then you can adjust the volume in serato if you need to go louder

i use an audigy 2 zs platinum sound card that has composite-in(L and R channels in) hook it up to my mixer and press record.

when recording... my levels do max out passed 100% and i just normalize to 96%... sound is excellent...

edit: oh and i then burn ALL my mp3z in a DATA format on DVD... then save/catalog my DVDz using this program called "advanced disk catalog" and badda bing you got all your tracks cataloged and backed up!
