Re: i finally made the switch to mac..
seriously, dude. mac is the key to getting your computer to step out of the way of your creativity. don't need to defrag, don't need to worry about program conflicts, don't need to worry about registry issues, viruses, or millions of programs running all together as a single platform...
they're just simple, stable, and smart. enjoy the new perspective on computing, bro! congratulations! |

Re: i finally made the switch to mac..
I recently made the switch too. I got the Macbook Pro 2.5. I uprgraded the RAM to 4gb, but left the hard drive alone. So far I'm happy with the conversion. I also bought Ableton Live 7...hopefully I made a wise investment. Anybody on Mac using Live 7? |

BACKUP YOUR FILES ON AN EXTERNAL.
TRUST me. Speaking from experience. Not such a big deal on a tower but if you have a mac laptop spare yourself the heartache. |

equal ops guy, needed 2, so I got black and white. It's like the difference between the old school casio with 15 keys and the korg triton. Anyone think industry standard? |

Re: i finally made the switch to mac..
So, I'm considering purchasing a mac for music production only. I've always been on a PC. Is this a good move? Will a used G4 in good condition do the trick? I'm really taking to Cubase, how is it on a mac? From my understanding the overall sound quality/processing is better. Can anyone confirm? thanks. |

Re: i finally made the switch to mac..
Nice! Yeah, I'm really glad I made the switch. Check this out, it emulates MPC cycling:

Also, Check out DrumStack
http://sonictransfer.com/sonictransfer-drumstack.shtml
Being able to add effects to each drum hit and layering them with different hits within one rack is sweet titties. No more complicated routing :D |

Re: i finally made the switch to mac..
Regarding the MPC cycling, PC users use Midi Yoke for their routing, and Mac users have a similiar routing utility called IAC Driver already built in. Enable it by opening Applications/Utilities/Audio Midi Setup. Click on the Midi tab, open the IAC Driver and click Device is online. Try it with your MPD!

Re: i finally made the switch to mac..
I would honestly just recommend going to the newest macs. If you're going to get G4s, you're going to experience way slower speed than you'd experience on a PC. The G4 velocity engine was comparable to other computers in its timeframe but now you would feel pretty unsatisfied.
Sound quality / processing will be the same from Mac to PC. Same code. Difference between Mac and PC is that people who develop for Apple have to put in more code to ensure compatibility. This makes apps work more smoothly on the platform because the likelihood of program conflict due to poor programming or underprogramming decreases.

Re: i finally made the switch to mac..
macs R durable!!! (dropped my MBP 4 times, once on concrete, still runs like a champ)
if you dont have applecare yet, dont worry about it till a week before your year is up.
they do crash just like any other computer, I bluescreened a number of times, win and osx (this was before i dropped it 4 times lol)...
So don't believe the stability hype. a comp is a comp. but yet, i still trust my mac more. a lil more dependable still. |

Re: i finally made the switch to mac..
However,
always remember that Apple is only concerned about getting more money from you... There is a reason that Logic 8 runs so poorly on PPC G5 computers. It's in their best interest to configure their software for newer computers. Anyone with a G5 or Powerbook will find that every update of Logic 8 will cause more and more problems.
Apple + Logic is a very expensive solution for sequencing. Not to mention, Logic 8 is a poor program for sound for picture and post production. If you are serious about making money with computer music, think about Pro Tools, Cubase or Digital Performer. I just finished scoring a film in Logic 8 on a Brand-New mac and it sucked ass..
Just a heads up... =)

Re: i finally made the switch to mac..
I run a Macbook Pro but have not installed boot camp.
Apparently running both OSs on your system makes it less stable. I do, however, have a friend in computer forensics who has a Macbook Pro that strictly runs Windows and apparently Windows runs much better on a Mac than a PC.
No matter what, I think Mac is the best system around. It's nice not to have to be a computer genius to keep your s**t running. Regardless of why you have to pay so much more for Apple computers, that extra money is worth the infrequency of computer-woes-related headaches.

Re: i finally made the switch to mac..
well, I do have a brand new dual core laptop mostly used for serato and such...and I'm running Cubase off an older dektop. It seems to run fine but I was just wondering if it would be worth it to get a Mac and use that for music only.
Thanks for the tips, perhaps I'm just better off taking my laptop offline and runing Cubase off that, it def is newer and faster. But Vista ftl.

Re: i finally made the switch to mac..
honestly, if you don't load a windows pc full of s**t they're not gonna break. I've worked a fair amount with macs and let me tell you they can be just as bitchy and pissy as a PC. I f**k with both and they both spit s**t back at me.
xp and vista are stable as hell as long as you run quality hardware and don't load em down with kitschy s**t or spyware apps. every time i see a PC owner with a million tray icons and stupid little dumb apps I want to stab them...
BYO PC for life!
