Time to discuss Equalization
Hey everyone.
What EQs are you currently using, and how are you using them?
I've been using the Sonalksis SV517MKII EQ for my precision/fixing eq, and the Waves REq for sweetening & creative crap. (Just for the session I'm working on this month, this may change when I get the Oxford & API stuff in July).
I also enjoy using the Vintagewarmer 2 for certain things, but it's limitations are becoming more and more apparent to me. If it's right for the sound, it's a godsend, if it's not right for the sound, it makes you sound like a hack.

Re: Time to discuss Equalization
What I can afford..... I'm only using the logic eqs . I wish I could afford a proper mixing pulg ins but ATM its just logic . I'm using them for basic eqing and for mixing .
* puts on noob hat
What's the diffrences in these eqs ?
Whats ways are you using your eqs ?
How can using eqs make get me closer to replicate the pendulum snare or a noisia recce bass ?

I heart Fruity Parametric EQ 2 ... I like how I can see the freq spectrums behind the actual EQ lines and what effect my adjustments have on the sound.

Re: Time to discuss Equalization
URS EQ Suite FTW! and all of the WAVES EQs....
Use of all of em really depends on what I am mixing or tracking and whether or not I am @ home or in a pro studio where I have access to outboard gear...then it's Pultecs, Manleys, API, SSL, or Neve! |

@ Calculon
EQ IMO is the most important thing to know about making music.
If you ever plan on truly shaping original sounds, mastery of it is key.
same goes for compression.

Re: Time to discuss Equalization
Yeah Origin is right on... About the FL EQ thing, it all looks nice but the more I use FL the more I notice how thin projects come out sounding once bounced down. You definitely need a multiband compressor and eq outside FL to sort of clean things up in the mix.
The best EQ's I've found out there so far is the Waves Diamond Bundle with the SSL eq/limiter. I have used the SSL 9000J console before and this plug-in does as good a job emulating the clean natural sound of the SSL channel strips as could ever be expected. That along with the rest of the Eq's, compressors, and tools in the Diamond bundle alone have been working wonders for me. |

Re: Time to discuss Equalization
I have a pair of vintage Quad Eight EQ 444's that are racked up with CA 227 Mic pre's.
The EQ 444's have pretty much everything you need.
Coincidentally I am actually selling them because I'm not really in the music game anymore.
$1100 Each $2000 for the pair if anyone is interested. |

It's an FLStudio plugin, also available as a VST as part of the Fruity Juice Pack. PC only, I think, unless Juice Pack is available for mac. Not sure how it 'sounds' (ears not trained enough... but it sounds great to me!) but I am absolutely in love with the visual feedback. I am an extremely visual person. With this plugin I can see precisely where problems lie and fix them on the spot... it's also taught a novice like myself a lot about the nature of sound and where various objects rest in the spectrum.

I use the renaissance eq always. I still don't understand eq completely, so I mainly use it to hi or lo cut. I try to use samples that are already sounding tight. |

Re: Time to discuss Equalization
the genwave stuff sounds pretty amazing. ssl and waves are good as well.
Coming from a long time cubase user, I would actually stay away from the stock eqs.. sorta iffy. version 4 just came out and they really stepped it up. Still the 3rd party ones sound WAAAAAAY better. |

Re: Time to discuss Equalization
@ mikeymcbeats
If you like the Logic Channel EQ, try this experiment. (And anyone else who uses logic)
Take a channel EQ with settings already on it, and change it to a LINEAR PHASE EQ. Click on the channel EQ then select EQ/Linear Phase EQ.
What will happen is that your EQ settings will be transferred to a different type of EQ that sounds much more transparent and clean. Linear Phase Processing requires more CPU to run, and adds latency into the signal path for that channel, but IMO sounds light years better than the Channel EQ.
Give it a shot and tell me what you think...

I haven't thought of using the Sonalksis TBK1 BP Filter in that way, I'll have to give that a shot. The Rvox is < to the Rcomp IMHO.

Re: Time to discuss Equalization
I use Voxengo Gliss EQ for pretty much every channel in the mixdown phase. The interface isn't the best out there, but the built in spectral analyzer is awesome and the flexibility of the 5 bands is pretty sweet, let's you get right in there and carve out the frequencies you need. I use T-Racks EQ for mastering, but that's mostly because it's bundled with Pro Tools. |

Re: Time to discuss Equalization
used to use the api 550b, then found that the urs a version of that eq worked and sounded just as good (and inside the box!)
lately, at least when making music i find that im using the stock logic eq's more and more when i need to salvage a certain sound or freq. for the most part i use a simple lo or hi cut filter (because the sound should already fit or sound good in the mix with lilttle work or else ill never finish the track).
once ive done a basic rough mix of the song with all the elements and arrangements finished, i will dump the stems from logic studio into a pro tools hd session and use pt's eq3 for further eqing, since it integrates the best with my d command.
same goes for compression really, i try to stay in the box as much as possible and use as little 3rd party plug ins unless its for fx or it sounds absolutely killer.
with that being said, trust your ears, not the gui or brand |
