Important question for all producers

Hey everyone,

As you may or may not know, I currently teach an Electronic Music Production course at SAE Hollywood. We are interested in offering an online component to the course and I wanted to see what the JS crew a question:

Would you pay to attend an online course on electronic music production? What if it was less expensive than taking the "In Person" course?

Thoughts?

Re: Important question for all producers

Sure, I guess. Though I would assume that since it is an online course, that whatever is being taught would be pretty basic.
I wouldn't mind saving some gas money and travel time if I were just taking an introductory, hands-off course.

Re: Important question for all producers

Yes, i would... depending on the details and outline of the course. Lack of money is what keeps me from attending one of these schools...
but you said "component" - meaning it would still be tied to 'in-person' course...? or a stand alone on-line course.

Re: Important question for all producers

Why not do a dnb production course outside of your school for all the heads on the board. Kind of like Danny Byrd I guess. You seem to be well knowledged and it will give an alternative to those thinking about going to LARS and SAE. Just a thought. If you did an electro seminar I would be down for that.

but that means we wouldn't get lab time huh? do you get lab time in the EMP course?

Re: Important question for all producers

Yes.

Definitely..

life is difficult enough when your on the go constantly, then add school? its almost impossible for some of us but if this was available online, that would be awesome.

Re: Important question for all producers

Yes please! I live in Santa Barbara and work full time..this would be great.

Edit:
What I've really always needed and lacked because of geographical positioning is pretty much just Q and A stuff. Like, there has never been many other DnB or Dubstep producers that I can sit down with and learn s**t from around here...it kinda sucks actually.
When you are in a place like LA that is saturated with fellow producers you can pick up techniques and such from one another via sessions and kicking back or whatever...I'm not afforded this benefit. There is only so much you can learn from production forums yano?

Re: Important question for all producers

i am always down to learn more. it does depend on what the course covers and how it would b presented. as to the cost of the course, it really depends on what i stated earlier, what is the course length, what it would cover etc...

maybe come up with an outline of the course.

Re: Important question for all producers

i would rather take the traffic congested journey to the school and get to work in person with the instructors. im a much more hands on learner, and would definatly want to take advantage of all the equipment i dont have at my disposal at home. although maybe a mixture of online classes and lab classes would be a bit more favorable, so maybe once or twice a month u have ur in class lab and most of the theory can be taught through online classes! i unoo just a thought!

Re: Important question for all producers

I tell you what, I'm taking online courses to complete my teaching credential, and they're more expensive than taking classes at a specific college (which I don't mind because it saves me gas/stress/time). If you offer online courses cheaper than the actual courses that would be awesome, but I guess I'd need more details on how you would do the course to be able to really make a decision.

Would it be a read then write essays/answer questions type course, or would it be more of a lab course?

Would you be able to talk with the professor live or just by email?

What do you have to purchase outside of the class fees to have running on your own computer to be successful in the class?

Questions such as this run through my mind.

Re: Important question for all producers

Here's what taking an online course for one of my classes would be like in the very near future:

1. you would be taking the class in real time with me and the students physically in the class.

2. You would be interfacing via two way video, you would be able to see me, and you would be able to see every other student patched in to the class via video. (The company we would be working with has this infrastructure already built)

3. you would have a real time audio feed of what I'm doing on the computer

4. You would be able to ask me questions via text or real time speech. You would also hear/see questions asked by other students both in the class and via the internet.

5. More even more insane details coming soon...

The online course would cost less than the regular course. Basically, it's just like being in the class with me, except you are at home in your comfy chair, probably having a sandwich or something.

Re: Important question for all producers

I was going to ask if online help was availible but after seeing your post Ryan, i would def be interested.
But would def make the decision based on how much and what the class has to offer.
