avoiding oversaturation
As a promoter what can you do to avoid damaging your community by competing with your peers for patrons?
Quality vs. Quantity. What's better for the scene as a whole? |

Re: avoiding oversaturation
the SD scene simply isnt ready for a drum n' bass events to happen everyday of the week. It is a simple fact that people get burned out. . . I'd much rather see a few good events go off than see several events where the attendance is bare minimum which has been the case for several events lately. It seems that people don't have the energy and/or the finances to go out. I've seen it time and time again to where people that do have the money and energy to go out eventually end up burning themselves out.

Re: avoiding oversaturation
here are some of the problems i see:
1. there are a finite amount of "desirable" nights to throw a big party or event - what i've found is that Thus.- Saturday are your most sought after nights - rightly so as they are the weekend nights, more people are willing to come out and stay outy all night. (more people = more $$$, better venue, bigger talnet)
2. there are so many diffrent promotion crews (at least in LA) - there almost can't be clear communication between all of them re: dates of events.
3. little cross promotion - promoters will rarely cross-pormote for an event, cross promotion helps everyone by building bigger crowds at multiple events!
4. lack of diversity - multiple events on the same night can work - but 2 parties with similar styles/vibes (ie: 2 ragga partys, or 2 tech-step parties) conflict and split the crowd base between 2 spots - while a crazy all out mash up ragga event and a liquid funk night, or a tech - step and a experimental night would probably both succeed, as you are targeting diffrent crowds on the same night!
hmmm, i know there are more, but that's all i can think of at the moment

Re: avoiding oversaturation
As it stands I plan on moving The Rapture to a weekend night and have it occur once a month starting in January or February. Can the powers that be let me know if they have a problem with me doing it on the third Friday or possibly the third Saturday? We should mos def work together to get these things spread out evenly for the overall betterment of the scene. Thank You. |

Re: avoiding oversaturation
Useful forum!!!
meltdown aside this is an easy problem to avoid.
Off Nights - be very mindful of other events scheduled on these nights. In SD especially the scene will not support them.
Fri. & Sat. - Shit happens there's always lots of things to do on these nights, just try to work together to minimize it. |

Re: avoiding oversaturation
This forum is a very good call!
Things seem to already be in fruition!
Regardless of meetings, we all have ways of contacting each other! It is just a matter of us swallowing our pride and spend a little energy to do so.
Thank you moderator Krezrock!

Re: avoiding oversaturation
I agree with all of brian's points, and I also think it's a great idea to at least make a serious effort to have a line of communication between the promoters in san diego. |
